Thanks GLeeM for the stats, much appreciated! 🙂

Welcome cactauz to the team. 🙂

Congrats to all the MM's and to mgpaulus on achieving 2.5M. Well done!

Nice work everyone. Looks like our point production is on a steady incline. 🙂

Enter team 198 while you are configuring the F@H client and your in. Look forward to having you aboard the TeAm.

Welcome cactauz and a big congrats to our milestone makers!

Thanks GLeeM for your continued efforts keeping us all up to date on our stats!

Quick question for the TeAm:
I am using Fahmon to monitor my hardware and I have noticed a disparity between what Fahmon calculates and what actually gets credited on the stats sites. I have Fahmon preferences set to calculate based on "all frames" which I assume would be the most conservative approach. Without putting too fine a point on it, Fahmon most often calculates high by as much as 33 per cent.
Has anyone had this experience and does anyone have an answer for it?

well... I think I just joined the team for folding... I wanted to start fold with the few ATI gpu that I have until they get a gpu client for seti.

Do I need to keep the GPU display open when crunching?... I notice that when I close the window, my gpu utilization goes to zero. I'm assuming I need to shut off the screensaver and set the power saving setting to off.

how long does it take for results... on one computer i'm gpu crunching on is a radeon 3650, and i have 8 threads running for seti on the cpu (i7)... so... with this informarion, how long do you think it will take for results?

my name is :dajeepster
and i joined team: 198
i've only down loaded and run the client from fold@home.

Not an expert on GPU client, but until an expert does give solutions:

Normally it is best to NOT have the GPU display open. It is curious that utilization goes to zero.
You may need to set the GPU client to a higher priority for it to get enough CPU cycles from the Seti client. There is a setting during configuration for a little higher priority or there is on most clients anyhow.

From what I have found is that Fahmon calculates PPD from the current client that is working. So, If all clients have low points, it is calculated at a higher PPD production. Bottom line, it only calculates at the current client only. At the end of the day, the average is what each client has finished and added up to an average by each web site depending on the timezone.

Under what OS? I think with an ATI card, you need to keep one CPU thread free to manage the GPU, otherwise your GPU PPD will be abysmal. Configure the GPU client for slightly higher priority too.

shut the GPU display off, the higher priority was already set.. oh.. and i'm running vista64.
utilization is still zero... been monitoring it with GPU-Z... I'll check back on it in a few hours... have to get some sleep before work tonight.

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64. Boinc client is 6.4.5.

I have two machines... one is as stated.

the other is a PhenomII940 set at 100%processor, and 95%cpu time... four threads of seti are running, and one gpu client of f@h is running. This computer started running fine when I changed from 100 to 95%cpu time.

the i7, is now at %90of of processors , and 95% cpu time. only 7 threads are running in seti now... and still no gpu client running.

Thanks Drsignguy. I have used Fahmon for some time now and never noticed this until I started using the GPUs for folding back during the Dec race. The GPUs are so fast, I guess they skew the calc.s to some extent. I think it has been almost a year since Fahmon has been updated.

dajeepster I may not understand the question but if you are running the console client you the window has to stay open. You can minimize it but not close it. That shuts down the client. Most people recommend the sys tray client.
Also I read some where that you should not run a screen saver of any sort as it uses too much resources and will really slow down your client.

Mine fluctuates from 105k to 116k ppd. I never seem to get closer than 95% of the low number, so I think there is a slight calc problem. It should be about what the average number I see is.

And I have tried every version, and they all abend many time a day. I wish an updated version was available.

I am sure there is a calculation problems, but I don't think it's with Fahmon. Depends on the rig and what it is doing. As an example, if you have a rig that has 2 gpu and 1 smp, the PPD production at its peak will diminish if you use it like surfing the web or e-mails. Antivirus or any other background program will also apply. If you then leave it alone for a while, it will go back up in production but will still fluctuate. So no matter what, each rig will have some discrepancies. Every machine has something working behind the scenes and will hinder the PPD in some way or another. It is like each PC has a personality, just like we do.

I just figure my PPD will be approx 5-10% lower than my maximum Fahmon monitors.

Doh!

Sorry dajeepster, I misunderstood. I'll bet Pokey is right. The DOS looking window needs to stay alive. I thought you meant the protien display that shows graphically a pretty picture/video.

thanks Pokey, VirtualLarry, and GLeeM for your help.

I forgot to try the oldest, tried and true method in the book... reboot

Everything appears to be working as long as...
-I rebooted the machine
-I don't open the protien display (you were correct on that assumption GLeeM... it seems that when i open the display, my drivers get corrupted.. i'm running catalyst 9.1.. but if I don't open the display...my gpu is being utilized.. according to gpu-z) and it's such a pretty picture too... i get mesmerized by it.

the i7 is actually running Server2008 64bit.

Pokey- I'm running the sys tray client... the catalyst drivers come with a link now when download the latest drivers... works on all ati 2xxx and above cards. too bad they couldn't get the 19xx and below cards to work .. i've got a few of those :frown:

also... does anyone have any tips and tricks for running headless units?.. ie... do I need to keep a load on the cards? Can i remote desktop into them and still have them work or do I need to access each locally?

Well, I think mine abends, since its not designed to do this with all my boxes at home (11 of them)

I read at the Folding@ Home website that the Protien display has known issues and shoulden't be opened anyway. Mine gave me problems also. If opened and you get it to open, it slows the client way down..
