...and a question: why does the PS3 not do better than it does...hoe many of the Cell's cores are utilized with the pre-installed F@H program, and will it crunch better if Linux is installed as an alternate OS?

There is no Linux F@H client for the PS3 processor - it's not x86. I think F@H uses all the Cell cores, (except one maybe?).
