I think the TeAm can do better than 170,000 PPD. We just need MFW and MadsMurph to crack open the throttle (or the checkbook) a little more. 😉

I noticed that nearly all of your WUs have been the 1760 pt variety. Are all of of your Folders running the Windows SMP client? How long (in hhmm) does it take for one of your machines to download, crunch and return one of the 1760-pt WUs?

Thanks,
-Scott

Yes, all run the SMP client. Download is immediate, crunch is 13 hours best (3.6 Q6600) to over 2 days for X2 4400@2.5, return is immediate. Having 5 quads makes a difference ! @C2D's (they do it in one day @3.2-3.3)

Amen! Let's get excited when it hits 200K.

Sid - when running SMP client on a quad, there's no benefit to running more than one instance of the client. BTW I think they've written some special code for our contest. I never seen so many EUE's and server problems. I think the F@h boys saw us coming -- guinea pigs (of course, I'm always the first to assume a "conspiracy theory.") If you've got a X1950Pro lying around, you can run the GPU client as a second instance of folding on the same box.

I have a 1900xtx and stopped using it after seeing the SMP performance on my Opteron 165. Would it be worth it to have the GPU client also run? I know it will eat 50% of the CPU when GPU is running.

So you know you've now got about 30 of us hoping you are going to try it and let us know if it works out to more combined PPD. I thgink the SMP works out to be better than one regular F@H client + a GPU client..... but I don't remember anyone trying a combo of GPU and SMP on a dual core. The quad core guys are the ones I think might benefit from one SMP and one GPU client. But I have nothing really to base that on except intuition.

I might try it. I'll just wait till this WU completes. 🙂

I can't install linux on my new 3.610 quad because of the 1 meg S3 video card I put in (low power and heat on a dedicated folding box), so maybe I will put in one of my two X1900xt's and try that ! I know the PPD of the cards, so if it slows down the SMP client, I just trun it off ! If it does work, then I have another box to try it out on also !

Interesting. My Q6600s are running at a slightly lower clock speed than your Quads but my machine are returning SMP WUs in less than 12 hours. The WUs issued to my Fedora Quads are always 1440 points. There seems to be some sort of disparity in the PPD between the Linux SMP client and the Windows SMP client. The Linux SMP client is faster so the Linux SMP WUs are rewarded with fewer points than the Windows SMP client (which is a wee bit slower) (that is my theory).

I haven't run any apples-to-apples comparison tests on my Quads to compare the SMP client on Fedora to the SMP client on Windows to measure PPD on the same hardware.

Mark, have you tried the Linux SMP client on any of your Quads?

If I could force my Quads to download only the 1760-point WUs, I'd be accumulating significantly more PPD. But think there is something on the "server" end that hands the more profitable WUs to the slightly slower client to keep things even between the Linux and Windows SMP clients.

My linux quad consistently downloads 1760 WUs. A couple of thing to check in -config: Make sure you chose big WU (>5mb) and also when it asks for RAM to dedicate or something like that, type in 2048 or number of your choice. I read somewhere that if you don't tell the linux client how much RAM you have, it defaults to some low number and thus crunches smaller WUs.

Thanks for the stats, GLeeM. 😀

I certainly hope that the race will add to the ppd of the TeAm! It would be bad if it would not ... :Q

When do you usually update the stats? I am asking, because today (December 2) @ 3 am, I uploaded my first WU (1760 points). Look here: http://folding.extremeovercloc...ummary.php?s=&u=160496

Not a problem, since the WUs will appear in the next set of numbers, just wondering. 😀

7 min 40 sec per step😀

set up 2nd SMP client:

both are 12 min 14 sec per step

Looks like it's worth running 2 SMP clients?

7 min 40 sec = 3,306 ppd

12 min 14 sec = 2072 ppd; so times two = 4,144 ppd!!

Is it only on the Linux client that two SMPs does better ppd?

@Peter
So happy for you 😛
And this IS fun!
And we just got over 12 inches of light fluffy snow 😉
Went out to start up snowblower this morning and no gas - first son stole the can!
Second son started to shovel end of driveway so we could go get some gas and stranger with pickup and plow stopped and helped. Driveway was clean five minutes later 😀 What a blessing, even made it to church on time!

Go TAS

EDIT: seems like I am crossing threads here 😕
@Peter
I do the stats after KakaoStats updates at 8:30 Central USA.

I just tried this (SMP + GPU) but I don't recommend it for C2D, only quads.

well, I just fired up the GPU client alongside a SMP client. The times may indicate that I get more PPD that way !

7:40 per step GPU = 660 PPD if I remember correctly

and SMP went from 8:18/step to 8:43 ! Not much effect ! I have a feeling I should do this.

LoL, GLeeM! That was a good Sunday!

I wish we had had the "lights and fluffy" snow - then the snowblower would have had a go! 😉

Thanks for the info, BTW! 😀

Thanks to our resident guinea pig MarkFW

I'm an admitted NVidiot, but to the ATI adjusted, it looks like there are still even more ppd to be had on those brandy new Quads!
