Congrats brianp34 on your 200,000 milestone

Been having some internet problems over the last week,so my production has been all over the place. Lost about a day in total of folding. Seems to be better now

Busy downloading Vista 64bit beta (over 4 gigs). Wish they would allow bittorrent

Hey, I'm BetaTested. I've switched over to Folding from Seti. I've got a small farm of 7 computers going at the moment. However as I've turned in a couple WUs now, most of the clients end up with an error upon reporting. So when I come home and check it's been doing nothing for several hours and I have to restart the client.

I'm not running the commandline client. And all machines are running Windows XP Pro SP2. My 2500+ machine experienced it, my Inspiron 9300 had it with it's WU, my P3 machines have had it. So I'm not sure what's up.

There is a file called "FAHlog.txt" that might help figure out what the problem is. Could you post the pertinent section of the log where the error occurs?

Do you have a proxy?

I'm not really seeing the part on the log files where the client wasn't running for an extended period of time. But I do know that occasionally when I've checked up on some of the computers there was a message "Folding@Home has encountered an error and had to be shut down. Do you want to send an error report to Microsoft?" type deals.

My laptop had one, and so did my 2500+ machine, and they both had them about the time they turned in their first work unit. My laptop is now pluggin on it's 3rd tho, and hasn't crashed again. So I'm not sure what's up. I could send the logs for both those machines to you and you could take a closer look at them, but I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. There weren't any kind of messages about errors. There were ocasional parts where in the middle of big work where it will say the client was started again.

I don't believe I had a proxy. All of my computers are hooked up one way or another to a Linksys router that connects to my cable modem. None of them have had real problems with accessing the outside world before(Well, BOINC would hate on one of my P3s, irregardless of OS, Mandravia, Ubuntu and Windows XP all ended up having the same issue, but it's working fine with F@H at the moment).

OK, at first I thought I might be something network because you said "most of the clients end up with an error upon reporting" and I took "reporting" to mean sending in results.

Now with more info I see that the client is encountering an error and it is Windows that shut it down and is reporting to you that it did so.

Usually if the client has an error it will say so in FAHlog.txt and either send in what it did so far or delete the WU and then get another. These can be caused by the WU or by the computer not being stable - overclocked too high or overheating.

Right now the answer is not coming to me. I have not had Windows shut down the client and show the 'send to MS message'. I will edit the title of this thread to see if someone that knows the answer will pop in and help.

It's plausible that overheating was the issue. I'm running my 7 PCs in the same room. The ambient temperature is probably in the mid high 80s. I've got a grand total of 9.6ghz worth of CPUs running in here. I might get a window air conditioning unit to help with the problem.

The only comptuer that is running above stock speeds is my Sempron 3100+, which is currently clocked at 1.9ghz, and it had the windows error, but prior to overclocking. I have not had it since.

Sorry to hear you're having problems. :(

Seems pretty selective to be overheating though, but even so I'd really suggest trying Speedfan or some other program to monitor those temps. Speedfan has a checkbox under options to work with Dell notebooks, too. :) http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

I'm still pretty new to folding myself, but to help narrow down the list of possibilities I'd suggest trying the console version instead of the GUI client on one or two of the problem machines, to see if the problem is from a conflict with something... I actually prefer the console version, as I ran into some conflcits with the GUI program and possibly my 9600XT card. If you want to try this, just follow the "MDE's Setup Guide" link at the bottom of Gleem's first post, and read the info for the "CLI"/client/console version as it tends to be called...

Other then that, I'm afraid someone else would have to step up... I don't understand what's going on in that log snippet you posted as I don't see anything like that in the logs from my client versions that I run on my Dell lappy, my main rig, a old TBird, and a Northwood P4 system. :(

Judging by your last sentence, are you saying the problems have since stopped? Or are they still occuring?

I just found the problem to persist on my Celleron 1.7ghz system. I checked my rigs and it was the only one that had produced the error again. Here's the log file to where it turned off:

As you can see, there's really nothing there that would indicate the crash was really caused by the program itself. So yeah, I dunno.

Check the windows event log (application) and see if there's anything in there.

Was the GUI window open or running from the Task Bar? Or was it running from the system tray (by the clock)?

It looks like it happened just when the protein would be displayed in the GUI. There are known issues with some graphics drivers and the GUI, (OpenGL stuff).

It doesn't look like it ran long enough for it to be heat related.

I bet you that it's the graphics driver conflict you were talking about. The celly system is running on the default windows driver for whatever integrated video that mobo is running. I'll switch my clients over to the command line shortly, and get back to you guys. After my current WUs end.
