Folding "evangelism"

Has anyone here tried spreading the "good news" of Folding@Home? I've posted a few basic messages summarizing the effort on some music forums I browse and have gained around 3-4 new full time folders (that I know of). I think if just a fraction of regular folders started making a few mentions of it on casual forums and Facebook groups from time to time and encouraged people to check it out, we could make a big difference in terms of the number of people involved. The way I see it, every person I get started is like an extension of my own folding farm..and it feels good. 😉

Not so much folding@home but other projects. Got a friend to burn in 64 cores on simap couple years ago. I try to recruit some friends to join in. One has a Bulldozer and he may join. Other guy has an FX 8320. Wife is watching the electric bills so might not make it in. I liked folding so much I named my old dog "crunch". 🙂

I don't exactly "evangelize" F@H because the first response I get is the electric bill or the heat. Especially given it runs into the triple digits around these parts, and any waste heat causes the AC to work harder/longer which makes the electric bill doubly worse.

But if the person lives someplace that gets snow, then it's fun to point out they can pay to run a room heater, or they can pay the same leaving the computer processing to cure some disease and still have a warm room. 😉

The 2011 heatwave was horrible. I had some $300 electric bills that year. I only had one last year.

The past several years have been usually hot here, which makes it all the more ironic that this year is actually rather mild... 97 is a far cry from 107! Only saving grace is that the kWh rate is below the national average here...

I took an opportunity to start a team at a forums that didn't have one, we have just over 80wus in about 2 months now, not bad. I still fold here, but spend time with both teams.

Well, I think I am the epitome (at least at Anandtech) of anal folders. I have 350k pd going right now, and $300 per month electric bills.

Nice! With my new Haswell rig I may finally sustain a >50K average. 😀

I've been tempted terribly to build a 4P F@H rig just for the learning experience and fun, but even with $600 E5-4650's off ebay I can't justify the cost nor have a place to run it anyway. One day perhaps!

It could be worse.. you could be one of those DC nuts that purchased SETI WUs on eBay in order to join them to the TeAm and advance in the standings. Been there - done that - got the work units t-shirt!

Ask a few of the other "old-timers" if you don't believe it. 😉

Seems like it was 3 or 4 at the time. We had a couple other people join the TeAm at the same time so it was quite nice at the time. I definitely wouldn't do something like that nowadays as there's too many other worthwhile ways to use $610.00 😉

Oh yea, I remember that! lol.

In the early years on this forum I used to do some casual recruiting on other forum sections & on other forums which didn't have a DC team. Latter on we got permission from the mods to post recruiting threads in the other sections here from time to time, we got a lot of new members that way. I haven't done any recruiting in years & years now! (TBH I've not been around here much the last 2(?) or so years).

Good point on using FB btw, I think I 'liked' the F@H site a while back but I've never actually tried recruiting there, maybe I will 😉.
