So how many and what type of cpu's are you running ? (bang/buck) I get over 2k point/day with this array of Athlon64's/Opterons. in F@H (note, 3rd place coming in 3 days)

2 2800+ Sempron (stock 1.6GHz)
1 Pentium M (Dothan) 1.86 (stock)
Northwood 1.6@2.4
Prescott 630 (stock)
X2 4400+

Not sure on points, I don't fold. I do SETI/Boinc, average around 1300.

Assume a 30 day month and that leaves you with a 3KW load... for 7 computers? Unless you are also running 7 monitors, 430W/computer is a bit unrealistic. (my sytems (see sig) will each run fine on a 300W PSU which includes start-up overhead... Steady state is well below that rating. (had to do this for a short time between replacements).

so there may be some other things in the house that need turned off too.

don't get me wrong, you're facing a $250/month electric bill jump... I wouldn't be willing to do even a small fraction of that for a DC project. Let alone the cost you put into your hardware.

So I guess my message is thanks for giving it a shot and I don't blame you a bit for your decision.

Just don't forget to keep having fun!

I'm currently running 2 of my 3 systems 24/7. My slow workbox at least 8hours a day (its only a 2.4GHz P4). Trying to get it into my colleauges machines aswell. Would bring me up around 6-7 boxes running 8 hours a day mininmum.

Do you have any teenage kids in the house? I'd look there first for ways to cut down on energy costs. Look for such things as leaving TVs on all night, propping the refigerator open while languidly perusing its contents, etc.-all the things that drove your dad crazy will now drive you crazy.

As for computers, physically turning off the monitors when not in use should save a bunch of electricity.

I run 6 systems 24/7 on FaD and don't really notice the change in electric bill. My bill changes only according to my heatpump usage. My highest bill this year, and it was a VERY hot summer, was $280. If I can go for a month without my HVAC system running, my bill is only about $130. Honestly, I don't even notice the 6 PC's on my bill.

How how electricity do those systems consume?
