Folders slow in opening

I find that opening folders in ubuntu is incredibly sluggish compared to xp. Is there any way to speed this up? It can be quite annoying to click on something and have to wait a few seconds for the window to open.

Edit: I think it has to do with my video driver, as in I don't think I ever installed a specific one. Is there a native linux driver for the Intel GMA 950 Integrated Graphics? Or some work around to get one?

X has decent support for recent Intel video chipsets.

Take a look at hdparm. There has to be an option to see how your hard drive is recognized.

Are other things like dragging windows slow as well? If not then it's probably not your X driver.

Like n0c said, check hdparm. It sounds like it could be your hard drive is powering down to save energy. On any computers I've switched over, Ubuntu seems much snappier compared to XP.

I find it hard to believe that any recent kernel on recent hardware would have DMA problems and it's more likely that if it's a recent kernel even the PATA driver will use libata so hdparm won't get you much.

What's your hardware look like? Do you have a hd activity light that you can look at when you click on things to see if it is the hard disk going nuts while you wait?

Last time I looked, most linux folder viewers tried to create a preview for every type of file they recognized, like PDFs, etc. Could that be the issue here?
