How do I make the total size of the folder show on the details? I can't find that option anywhere.

In Windows Explore (Vista), right/click in an empty area of the bar that displays the column headings and select or deselect as appropriate for your needs.

I've been trying that- none does as I or the OP wanted. I want it to display the size of all the items inside a folder when I am at the folder level.

If
'D:\porn" contains 1TB of porn in 1024 files
"D:\work" contains 2MB of word docs in 50 files
"D:\music" contains 1GB of music in 100 files

When I point explorer to D:\, I want to see folders for porn, work, and music, with 1TB, 2MB, and 1GB next to them. The Vista columns seem like they would work, but they aren't. I'm running Ultimate, updated recently. There used to be a utility for XP that did this, it was called FolderSize.

Pandamonium,

The information in the right pane of Windows Explorer as it relates to size, etc. only pertains to individual files. In either the left or right panes, you can right-click on any given folder and select Properties and it will tell you how many files and their total size, among other things.

I know of no function native to Vista or XP that will give you this information (for a folder) by simply pointing at it with the mouse. If you will right-click on a large folder, such as Windows, and select Properties, and watch the ensuing display, you will understand why it isn't available in a pop-up balloon type of display.

Agree fully with the Swampster. There is a good old program (which keeps getting updated in a Windows Version) that can do what you want. It is called "ZTree." It is the son of our old classic XTree Gold which we used extensively in the DOS days. It uses the traditional DOS GUI, and has a huge library of functions that give the user much more file management power than anything in Windows.

As mentioned, this has always been a shortfall in Windows Explorer.

This is always a big time-waster, trying to find out how much data is in folders. I don't know why Microsoft doesn't implement a real-time update of folder sizes. Folders are just "files" in the file system, so the display option for file size is already in place.

The OS knows when a file is added or deleted from a folder. It could start a backupground update of the folder size, display that size information, and indicate with a "*" or some other symbol if the folder size hasn't been fully updated yet.

Windows DOES keep the folder size calculations for folders, and those are available from the popup when hovering the mouse cursor over the folder name. But sometimes the numbers are only "greater than 800 MB" or something similar. And they aren't listed in the Explorer display and you can't sort by folder size, which would be invaluable.
