I had a computer dropped off here that had 4 viruses and a huge amount of spyware. It took me the better part of a day just to get it to boot without crashing. Anyway now when ever it boots up a open folder shows up on the screen maximized. The folder is C\ Windows\ system 32.

I can close it no problem but it is there at every boot and it bugs me. Any idea how to stop it. I am also trying to get rid of a program that loads called AOL spyware protection. It will not uninstall and it bugs me also :)

Try this.

Go to Start,Run,
type the following: msconfig
Go to the startup tab and untick windows explorer.
If you see anything like ckhsxs32dkhs.exe, untick that too, but prob best to post back first just to make sure.

I dont see either one of those but there is a ton of crap yet to be cleaned out of this thing.

It does have a MSG 32 EXE listed there.

I would love to but it is not mine. I am giving it back soon because at least it runs now. Most of the spyware is gone but there is not a program that this guy didnt like. lots of trial stuff that takes over.

It is a possibility that you still have some nasties.

What progs did you run to get rid of the malware?

OK,
Download and install the following (after uninstalling your present antivirus):
Kaspersky trial
Adaware
Spybot search and destroy
Superantispyware trial
spysweeper trial

Update them all.
Turn off system restore. (some say you shouldn't do this as you have no base to go back to if it all goes tits up, but it is possible for some nasties to hide in these files, so to make a clean system, its prob best to turn it off)

Reboot into safe mode.

Scan with all the above progs

See what comes up now.

I hope you did not charge to do the job and if they want it functional you're going to have to delete the partition and rebuild it, format it and reload windows from scratch.

Nope no charge at all. I am not that good at this stuff that is why I came here to ask how to get rid of that folder. I have fixed quite a few though for friends so word gets around so I often get these things dumped on me. I do the best I can with them but never charge.

Any ideas on how to stop that folder from being there at every start up? He still has about 8 programs that load at start up.
Montag, I will try those others so far I have ran Windows defender and Adaware in safe mode and the come back clean.

Here is a copy paste of Hijack this log just for the hell of it.

to be honest to clean up all the junk I see, and even get it to run semi-decent, you'd be better off reloading windows, because the time you're going to waste on trying to fix the issues and whatever damage has been done, you'd be done reloading windows and nable to do other things. there's a point when a tech has to look at the time he's going to put into a fix a virus/malware issue and the chances that it'll be very unstable afterwards, versus wiping out the partitions and reloading.

I'd professionally tell them that either I redo the system and install the proper antivirus and antipyware or I would not touch it, it'd cost too much in effort and time to rmove everything and then deal with all the stability issues and other errors. Suggest to them that it'll be cheaper for them to let you do it now than later.

Probably sooner. It took me some time to realize that people who get their computer all messed up in such a manner are not going to change their ways.

I had one return in 24 hours once.

Cleared it right up.

robisbell, I am far from a pro. And never charge. The owner swears that he needs all that stuff in there starting up.

One thing I would love to stop starting is the AOL anti spyware.. It wont let me delete it because files are missing but it runs all the time.

ugh, be careful doing stuff like this for free. I'd sit down and ask him what he does with the pc exactly, get as much details about files and stuff he would do with it, set up another system that did the same stuff they needed and let him play on it for a bit, then his, they'd end up wanting theirs fixed and setup like the test unit.

How long does it take to boot?

Yeah, unfortunately it prob would be best to format as above, then slap the user around the head a couple of times before hiding his mouse.
