"are intended for use at low speed to increase the illumination directed towards the road surface and verges in conditions of poor visibility due to rain, fog, dust or snow."

This is what Wiki says fog lights are for, I would tend to agree with them.

My question is why do countless numbers of morons drive around with their fog lights always on? Is it +5hp? Or maybe it just detracts from how mundane the rest of the car is. Either way my dads '88 Isuzu Trooper had fog lights which automatically means they can never be cool, so stop using them.

No idea -- I see it a lot too. I guess they think it looks cool or something. Idiots.

My truck has them, and I actually see better regardless of the speed I'm driving with them on. My headlights kinda suck, though. The fog lights automatically turn off when I put my high beams on. Not sure if that's a normal thing, or just a Ford thing. I think a lot of people like them since it's an option and it's kinda like showing off. Plus it's a hassle to turn them off and back on all the time.

Judging by your name, you have an '02 Ranger I bet? I have on '05 and my fogs turn off with my high beams too. But it makes sense if you think about it. You're not supposed to use high beams in fog, so therefore... if you're using the highs, you're not in fog, so you don't need the foglights. As to why Ford decided to force that, I don't know. Having the fogs on with high beams certainly doesn't hurt anything.

As far as why people drive with them on even when it's not foggy... I will do it sometimes if only to help oncoming cars see me better. on certain roads it's a good thing to be visible as much as possible.

Most Pontiacs turn off the fog lights when the high beams are on, too. People wonder why I get angry when I'm riding with someone who flashes an oncoming car that they think has their high beams on when their fog lights are on too. I just assumed most cars did this.

giantpumpkin, I do have an 02 Ranger. I really like my truck, how about you? Anyway, maybe most cars do turn fog lights off with high beams, I don't know. It does make sense. I really haven't ever had any problem with other cars' fog lights, and I honestly don't understand why people don't like seeing them. I run mine all the time, mostly because I get annoyed reaching across the dash to turn them off. They're not really that bright, and they're low enough they shouldn't get in the way of other cars. It doesn't hurt anybody, so it doesn't matter to me.
