I never knew there was such a thing as fog light laws? What is the law? No fog=no lights?

Why the hell is it illegal to have it on? Not like it is bothering anyone.

not sure but for reference. in IL we are allowed only to have 2 auxiliry lights on at any given time on the road. the typical must not be red or blue rule. no limit as to when it should be on or off.

fog lights are so low to the ground it doesn't bother anyone. Well other then the F150's around here who mount HID kits and drive with fogs ONLY on at 3am. thoses can get annoying...

Heh, my 951 with the factory driving lights doesn't meet those requirements for either the driving lights or the fog lights (both are too low to the ground).

Come to think of it, the factory fog lights on my Volvo are too low as well. There aren't a lot of passenger cars with fog lights that are a full foot above the ground.

Mine are always on because it's bad-ass and looks up to snuff with skoorb.

From what I understand though most cars' "fog lights" actually suck in the fog. Real fog lights are better than what factory puts in.

what pisses me off is that most people with the driving lights have them aimed up instead of on the road, blinding the fuck out of everyone in front of them. on a street/ freeway that is fully lit. turn the shit off in town, dumbasses. or at least aim them correctly to NOT blind people

Thats just the position of it, but how about the usage of it, or is that all there is?

I need to find a cop I guess and ask.

I live in FL, and I've never met anyone who's been ticketed for foglights, or purple/blue headlights, or horrible aftermarket HID hatchet jobs.

So enforcement is pretty lax.

I think all cars should have mandatory REAL fog lights, especially the ones in the rear. It would help tremendously in very heavy rain as well. That's really where my front fog lamps come in handy - heavy rain or snow, let's me see the road and the conditions of it much better.

getting hassled by the man is definitely not fun, but I really wouldn't worry about it. Basically every kid in Orlando/Tampa/Jax/Miami/WPB has a shitty civic with 'em and probably a fart can to boot, and they don't get hassled.

One of my neighbors ran his WRX completely unmuffled off the cat for 6 months and never got pulled. Yeah it was...quite loud.

I honestly think FHP/Sherrifs just don't give a crap about a lot of the laws.

My problem with fogs is the lifted trucks that haven't adjusted accordingly, so instead othem illuminating the road surface they are directly in my eyes. Pisses me off everytime.

A good set of fog lights, like from PIAA or Hella, when properly aimed (which is about 1" below the lamp center line on a level surface about 25 feet from a wall) will do an excellent job, in fog, snow and heavy rain. My old Grand Am a 1989 had the PIAA 960 series combo fog and driving lights (2 seperate bulbs and lens sections) and they worked wonders. Especially on a dark road, like Route 287 in the dead of night, when the only light out there comes from your car. I still have the units, but they would not really fit properly on my 1999 Grand Prix

Because most law enforcement personal are normal reasonable people, except in a few totalitarian big cities with budget problems.

The purpose of the law is to serve justice, not necessarily the will and whim of government. Enforcement of the law should be to serve justice, it should not simply be enforced solely because it is the law:

Law is often the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the right of an individual.

Thomas Jefferson

Though you should respect the equal rights of other individuals and make sure they are installed and aimed correctly, except when the other individual voluntarily puts himself in extreme circumstances (eg: a person who lowers their car 0.1" off the ground can't really complain about other cars' factory lights blinding them).

My brother got pulled over in Georgia for having his Fog Lights on and nothing else in the city in his 04 Expedition. The officer gave him a warning and told him they could only be on in inclement weather. I think its kind of dumb to just run around having your fog lights on and nothing else. But with your other lights on it makes perfect sense to me to help with visibility.

You know that's just the excuse for pulling him over, but they were checking to see if he was drinking, had drugs or warrants for his arrest. It sucks that cops can get away with crap like that.

In all the states, the law requires that your running lights (side markers, tails, etc) also be on when the fog lights are in use.
To satisfy this, what I do is take power for the Switch to the Relay Coil from the Parking Lamps fuse. That way, you must turn
on the parking lamps in order to be able to turn on the Fog or Driving lights.

OK, well I just got a reply to my email to Florida Highway Patrol.

Dear thescreensavers,

Thank you for your inquiry. The statute that you quoted is the key. You may use fog light with dim light only. The law does not describe when to use them, only how you are to use them. If I may be of further assistance to you, please do not hesitate to call or write.

Thanks,

Jesse.

Sergeant Jesse M. Evans

So I guess its ok to use Fog lights as long as you have other lights accompanying them, Not just fog lights alone.

btw the statute I put in the email to them is what bruceb linked

Any motor vehicle may be equipped with not to exceed two fog lamps mounted on the front at a height not less than 12 inches nor more than 30 inches above the level surface upon which the vehicle stands and so aimed that when the vehicle is not loaded none of the high intensity portion of the light to the left of the center of the vehicle shall at a distance of 25 feet ahead project higher than a level of 4 inches below the level of the center of the lamp from which it comes. Lighted fog lamps meeting the above requirements may be used with lower headlamp beams as specified in s. 316.237(1)(b).

I believe it's illegal in most if not all states to have fog lights on while you have your high beams on. Shouldn't really be an issue because I've never seen a car wired from the factory that didn't shut the fogs off when you turn your high beams on. You can't drive in the dark with just fog lights on either. It's also illegal in some areas to have your fog lights on when there is no adverse weather. Not sure why. Never heard of anyone being ticketed for it either.

what pisses me off is that most people with the driving lights have them aimed up instead of on the road,

That's where driving lights are supposed to be aimed. If they are aimed at the road, they are not driving lights, they're fog lights. Real fog lights should also be yellow because they won't reflect back as much light off of white snow and fog as a white light will.
