I need to get a new bed, a Queen size. I want to try something other than springs, like memory foam or something. Or is Latex better? I have no idea. Does anyone here have a memory foam bed? If so, how do you like it?

I don't want to pay a crapload of cash either. I've read a lot of people get theirs from ebay. Any good advice will be appreciated. I really don't know a thing about foam/latex mattresses, OT forum to the rescue?

I just bought a 3" topper for a queen size bed from Overstock.com, and received a confirmation that it has been shipped today. I will let you know how it works out. :)

That could work, but i was kinda hoping to get a full size mattress, would be nice to get rid of my current one (which is a full size, and isn't big enough, my feet hang off). How many different parts are there to a foam mattress usually? Just the mattress and topper?

i went to my local mattress pro and they had a knock off version of the tempurpedic made by a big company.... truthfully it was softer then the tempurpedic and much more cushy.... and it was like half the price... so i bought it.... and i love it to death... i sleep so well in it, i over slept for work today.. hahahahahahahahahahah... had to be up at 7 to get to work at 8.... got up at 9.. HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA... oh yea the bed was $1000... expensive, but beats paying $2000-$4000 for a "real" tempurpedic" which is more stiffer since the foam density is higher...

Ours has served us well for the past year. Every time we go on a trip, I can't wait to get back home to sleep on my comfy bed :p

there is a whole thread devoted to this topic on FW
long thread on memory foam

wade through it for information on type/pricing/etc/recommedations.

I would recommend a mattress topper if price is an issue. They can be had at overstock.com.
I would go with at least a 3 inch topper - get the king size one and cut it down to size because they are all the same price.

Edit: get the larger one and cut it down to size because at least for me, the queen topper was smaller than the mattress.

I used that thread when I was buying a mattress for myself last fall. I got a queen mattress from foamdistributing.com for $460 (it's gone up since then, due to the jump in oil prices).

I love the mattress.

It's 5" firm foam foundation, 4" 5.3-lb density memory foam on top.

That's just my experience. I was nervous about buying a mattress online, without trying it out, but it worked well for me.

Is the mattress all you need? Seems like people buy like 3 different layers of foam, all different types for some reason.

It's two layers of foam glued together. The reason for the different layers is that the memory foam needs to have something different underneath it for stability/firmness/support. Some people like one layer of really firm for the base, one layer of semi-firm on top of that (those two layers are for support) and a layer or two of memory foam, for comfort. Memory foam comes in several different consistencies, some really soft - for lightweight people, or people who like really really soft foam - and others in the firmer range.

I've had a really firm foam mattress for 20 years, replaced that with a foam-memory foam combo. As I say, it's great. I wouldn't want it any softer, then I'd never get out of it!!

I shopped at lots of mattress stores before buying online, and I liked this type of mattress, but couldn't spend several thousand dollars.

Foam is warm by itself! I sleep with only 1 blanket now.

I have a Sealy Reflexion latex bed (the Newport Beach in Q size) and love it. Here's where I bought mine, cheapest price I've seen and the service was top-notch.
