I'm planning on arriving nearly 2 hours ahead of departure time.

What I plan on taking in carry-on. Anyone see any problems??:

Laptop
CD-Player
Headphones
AA batteries
Book or 2
2-3 Pens
Pad of Paper
Money Clip w/ cash
Wallet with assorted cards
Cell Phone

I generally carry a small pocket knife. Can I pack it with my checked bags or should I just leave it home?

Can I lock the bag(s) I check?

Any other recommendations? I'm not much of a traveller. ;)

No problems on the contents of your bag. You can't lock the bags you check in (not the carry-on) - they have to x-ray and inspect all contents now (started Jan. 1st) - well you can lock your bag but it might be busted when pickup your baggage.

You can carry your pocket knife in your checked in baggage just fine.

You can get it back when you return though right?

Make sure the money clip doesn't have any sharp edges. And they could possibly open the checked luggage if they think there's anything in there, if you use locks they can cut them off so maybe use plastic zip ties.

I fly with my leatherman in my checked baggage. My dad has gotten to security and realized that he had his leatherman on him. He ended up mailing it to himself. He carries a padded envelope now with enough postage on it to send almost anything to himself or where he's going.

From what I here don't put chocolate in your checked baggage. They need to at least run a chemical check for explosives. Chocolate gives a false positive so you'll get some guard pawing through your underwear.

If you are an 80 year old, grey hair, fragile old lady with a walker they will single you out for a strip search while all the Middle Eastern men between the ages of 18 and 45 are waved onto the plane.

if your trip is less than 5 days, just pack a carry on, if you have the right suitcase.

Laptop will require an extra step before you can pass though the gates. Knife in the checked luggage.

Just make sure you turn off your cell phone before the plane gets ready to push back from the gate. Some people make me feel uncomfortable when they leave their phones and and it rings during takeoff ...

They say that cell phone signals can interfere with instrument landing systems. Not much of a problem when taking off but lots of other flights are coming in at the same time.

you need to have empty pockets, you can have your knife in your checked baggage, laptop must come out of carrying case and be placed in plastic bin to be scanned. EMPTY YOUR POCKETS. I've forgotten a pen and set the thing off.

also you CAN lock your checked bags, however I don't anymore, after they took bolt cutters to my lock(s) to do a search in my checked luggage.

Depending on the airport, they may do the bomb screening immediately after you check in. I flew out of Champaign a few weeks ago, and the bomb machine was directly next to the ticket counter. They gave me my boarding pass and tags for the bags, then told me to go walk over to the machine. There they had me unlock the bags, they searched them, then I relocked them and finished checking them. I'm flying out of Cleveland on Sunday and I'm curious to see if they have everything set up the same.

A tip - Bring zip ties, but don't tie your bags right away. See if you can tie them after they go through the bomb machines since I heard the machines are wrong 33% of the time (thus they will be hand searching your bags).

BTW, if they search any checked bags after all the initial screening they're supposed to put a card in (I heard this on the news anyway) saying what they did. So if you put zip ties on after the initial screening, but they aren't there when you get your bags and there is no info card in your bags, you can bitch.

I flew a couple of months ago. Before that it had been well over a year.
If you are being picked up they only let ticketed passengers enter the terminals now so they will have to meet you outside of the security area.
Take everything but the pocket knife. Place it in your luggage you check-in.

the metal detectors are a lot more sensitive than they used to be, don't wear shoes with metal on them

Here's an itemized list, since I fly roughly 2-3 times a month.
-Place EVERYTHING from your pockets, front and back, into your carry on bag, before you go through the metal detectors.
-Now put your boarding pass back in your pockets. :) You'll need to show this before they even let you up to the metal detectors.
-Put your watch in your carry on.
-Put your belt in your carry on.
-Take your shoes off
-You only get 1 chance to go through, if it beeps, they pull you aside and wand you.
-Now all you'll have is your laptop, your carry on bag, and your shoes to keep track of. Trust me, when the lines are long and the airport is busy, you don't want to be fumbling around all over the place chasing after your change, your watch, your tickets, your wallet, your cell, etc. And when it's busy, the people's stuff behind you is pushing you through thte machine.

That's the best advice I have.

Thats about as far from the truth as can be.

At least in Houston, Intercontinental Airport.

I think he's paraphrasing the movie "Airplane."
