Flying - Im back!

Eh, Im going to the Dominican Republic for a week during march break. Leaving tommorrow. I didn't really want to go, but my mother insisted :\ Now this will be my first time flying, and I am NOT looking forward to it. Im actaully kinda excited about going to the Dominican to lay in the sun for a week, but the flying part is starting to freak me out.

I couldn't even finish a slice of pizza tonight, I think becasue I'm already started to get the jitters 🙁 Any advice for a first time flyer?

EDIT:
Phew, am I glad to be home. The Dominican was fun and all but Im very happy to be back here ( and on the ground.)

As for the flying, once I got to the airport I calmed down and everything was fine. I was suprised how easy the landing was, once second I was looking down at some village buildings a good distance up and the next instant we touched down, I was impressed.
Todays flight home however didn't go as smooth. I was a little woozy for the first hour, then sick for the next 2 ( I had the barf bag out and ready, but luckily I kept it down ) The last hour we passed over land, Washington DC / Philly area so that past quickly as I looked down on the SimCity-esk view. Neat stuff. The plane was very uncomfortable though, and now I'm off to check out the rest of my stuff to check!

Flying is safer than driving.

😀 Hell i'll take flying over driving around LA anyday...

How old are you?

If you're of legal age, ask the stewardess for a shot before you take off.

Or....

Take some Tylenol PM or something else to relax you.

As minendo said, flying is safer than driving.

Im 19, so I suppose I could take something 🙂 About flying safer than driving, that may be true, but I think the chance of walking away from a car crash is a lot greater than that of a plane crash 🙁

Get some vodka from the workers and you'll be straight

This reminds me of my first time flying..

About 4 years ago was my first time ever on a plane.. I was scared sh#@less and I was with my boss who knew it wsa my first time flying .. We get on the plane and all is well, then the plane starts to take off and once were about 20 feet off the ground, someone in the back starts SCREAMING at the top of their lungs.. Must've been their first time flying too.. Didn't comfort me too much and my boss just kinda looked at me with terror in his eyes too.. Needless to say we made it to Atlanta safely..

The second time I flew was obviously on the way home from Atlanta .. It was FRIDAY THE 13th!@! We had a 6am flight and were driving to the airport around 4:30am and a BLACK CAT ran across the street in front of us at a stop light .. We both contemplated staying an extra day or two just for that reason.. 🙂

Well, the chances of crashing in a car are better than an airplane..so the odds are still in your favor. =)

I've flown a few times in my life (numerous commercial flights...personally flown several aircraft ranging from a Cessna 150 to a racing glider & Cessna 182 Turbo RG..)..and I'm still around =)

Doesn't matter. The odds of dying in a car wreck are still FAR greater. You're more likely to get hit by lightning, or hit by a car while walking down a sidewalk, than to crash in a plane.

Exactly... at least when you're in the air you're in the hands of a skilled crew with thousands of hours of experience, riding in a vehicle that is generally state of the art technology.

trust me man. flying is safe as can be. sure there are accidents, but thats almost impossible. i must have been on more then 50 flights in my mere 15 years of living. not once did anything bad occur (only delays etc.)

enjoy the flight.

I like flying, and yes driving is far more dangerous. Just bring a book/music etc, get a window seat if you can 🙂

I've been flying since I was a kid, I guess that's probably the reason I'm so used to it. But sometimes I get the jitters too, for the exact reason, that *if* something did go wrong, not like you could walk away from it. I've been in five or six car accidents (no, I wasn't always driving) and walked away from every one with no more than the wind knocked outta me. Doubt I'd survivie five or six plane crashes. Can't say I wouldn't be very annoyed at a person who started screaming on a plane though, first time or not.

Actually, most are pretty old technology. When was the 747 first introduced, the 70's?

chew gum during the flight... helps pop your ears.... ask for a window seet for the view... flying is a piece of cake, like a bus only with stewardesses

Just sit back and relax. Make sure your stomach is NOT empty but don't go on board with a full stomach. Just get something light. Chew gum. Anything made from mint will help you. 🙂

If you do plan on take advantage of the drinks from the drink cart, ensure you plenty of $5.00 bills in your wallet. 😉

What can I bring on the plane? Carry on luggage wise. Will I be able to bring a backpack on with me?

Yes but the avionics are all modern. Traffic avoidance system, onboard weather radar, all kinds of goodies.

You should be able to sport a backpack (depending on what else you're carrying on). Don't forget your hipflask - to soothe those fears away.

It sounds like you're suffering from a bit of "pre-anticipatory" anxiety. Is there a way you can practice some relaxation exercises?
