Fly or drive from San Diego to San Francisco?

What would be cheaper and more convenient? I'm trying to decide whether I should drive up fly up to SF. I'll be staying in a hotel, so if I drive, I'll need to consider parking. Do hotels have their own parking garage? How much is parking per day? If I fly, how convenient would it be to take a shuttle to the city from the airport? thanks!

I'd fly. Parking downtown in any major city sucks and is expensive plus there's good public transit in SF. Whether your hotel would have onsite parking (or valet service) is something you can call and ask. As for taking a shuttle from the airport, I just went there on a business trip last week and the cab fare from the airport to downtown was around $35-40 and it might be less if you used a shared ride van service.

depends on what you want to get out of it. If you want the view, then as suggested, take the pch up. if youre looking for convenience, then fly. If you want to waste 8 hours, take the 5 north. :)

This. I've made that drive several times and will make it several more times. I'll never get sick of it.

It'll just take forever. Honestly, I've lived in SoCal for 21 years and never made that drive. Only times I've been to San Francisco I've flown. It's a 1.5 hour flight and there are flights practically every hour.

I am planning on a nice 2 day motorcycle ride up the coast though one of these days with friends.

My thoughts exactly. Driving can be so peaceful and fun though. And you'll have the needed transportation once you arrive.

Which route is faster? PCH or 5?

It's like 25-50 a day to park your car in SF, depending on where your hotel is located. Flying is much more economical.

I'd drive up the PCH, but I'm a sucker for a picturesque drive.

It's awesome for a little while--then it becomes a painful, spiteful drive.

It is one of the greatest drives in the country, though...if you're patient and want to kill a day.

If you drive, do the coast and take your time, 3-4 days. Otherwise, just fly.

The ONLY reason to drive would be to do the coast and see the sights. Otherwise flying is cheaper and wiser.

BART goes from SFO to downtown SF. If you're traveling fairly light and the hotel is near a BART station, it's tough to beat the price.

From San Diego I'd fly.

Fly. I hate driving and parking in SF. When I lived in California I avoided driving in SF at all costs.
