That seems like semantics to me. I've never known anyone that actually "got the flu" having organ shutdown either.

I'm just saying, people have gotten the "flu vaccine", and "gotten the flu (symptoms)".

It's not like flu vaccine production is high-tech like chip production. They grow these things in chicken eggs.

When I worked in a hospital I got it every year as I was doing it to protect other patients more than myself. I never personally gotten sick (or symptoms or w/e) from it, but it's a well established fact that some people do.

Yeah it is high tech.
They also grow them in animal cells and they also have recombinant flu vaccines that they grow in insect cells

Then you actually got the flu before your body was able to make the the antibodies (2-3 weeks)
You can't get pneumonia from the flu vaccine.

What about people who get a seasonal flu vaccine and still get sick with flu symptoms?

There are several reasons why someone might get a flu symptoms, even after they have been vaccinated against flu.


  1. One reason is that some people can become ill from other respiratory viruses besides flu such as rhinoviruses, which are associated with the common cold, cause symptoms similar to flu, and also spread and cause illness during the flu season. The flu vaccine only protects against influenza, not other illnesses.
  2. Another explanation is that it is possible to be exposed to influenza viruses, which cause the flu, shortly before getting vaccinated or during the two-week period after vaccination that it takes the body to develop immune protection. This exposure may result in a person becoming ill with flu before protection from the vaccine takes effect.
  3. A third reason why some people may experience flu like symptoms despite getting vaccinated is that they may have been exposed to a flu virus that is very different from the viruses the vaccine is designed to protect against. The ability of a flu vaccine to protect a person depends largely on the similarity or “match” between the viruses selected to make the vaccine and those spreading and causing illness. All I know for certain is that while I've gotten tender glands and a low-grade temp along with mild feelings of malaise after getting a flu-shot for a few days I've personally never gotten sick from it.

However I also know for certain that the last two years I actually had the flu and there's zero chance of confusing the symptoms! The 2017 version was extremely bad to the point my buddy at work actually passed away from it and I was close to heading for the ER a couple times myself with trouble breathing.

I felt kinda gross for a few days after last time I did it. Could be coincidence, could be a side effect. 1 point isn't data and all that.
 
I don't normally get the flu shot because the couple times I have, I still got the flu. And I always feel like crap for few days right after I get the flu shot.

Now I skip the flu shot and just try to avoid humans much as possible. I also try not to eat out as much during the flu season. If I do eat out, I stick with deep fried fast food. I figure deep frying will kill any germs and viruses.

Look how divisive this topic is. We have the world's biggest library available right here at our fingertips - information evolves, I would suggest you not refer to published books with details & findings that also change over time.

Instead, why don't you and everyone else telling us their not feeling well is "not a result of the flu shot" actually point us to the exact reason why they show symptoms instead of just saying "that's not how it works". Clearly their not feeling well is only happening after getting the shot... like I said, it's making them unwell. I didn't say flu-like symptoms like a joint pain or fever. I said stuffy & runny nose, and as a result of that, now a slight cough. And it's not a result of any other reason seeing the extent of time that has passed since anything like this has happened with them.

Lastly, I'm not anti-vax at all. My kids get shots every year. The issue is it can and has made them unwell thereafter and it bothers me since they are fine beforehand. I am spleenless and they actually require me to get a shot too.

I came in here to joke, but then realize you're posting questions about your kids so I'll be serious for a post.

Here's the deal...Flu Vaccine isn't supposed to make you sick, but you can have side effects from it. If you had the flu, you'd have serious temps and wouldn't bounce back from it quickly. Some flu infections can take weeks to clear and can be pretty serious if your immune system is down. Flu is viral, so antibiotics don't help with it....but they can help boost your immune system by fighting bacteria that may be spreading its defenses thin. Doctors that prescribe antibiotics too readily kind of suck and are just showing up to work at the expense of their effectiveness...(that's another rant)

In general, it's good to get plenty of rest and eat healthy through the Winter and Spring to keep your body healthy and defenses up...wash hands readily because Flu is spready through sneezes and coughs by people who don't cover their mouths...or DO cover their mouths, but don't wash THEIR hands.

Read this from the CDC...they conducted blind studies and found that flu shots can cause more site injection soreness, but otherwise doesn't cause much difference...

You CAN get a low-grade fever as a reaction to the shot. I would say, kids are more likely to have a reaction just because the ratio of vaccine to their body mass is different than an adult...

A lot of people die from the flu each year....it's why we bother with the shots. It's not something to take lightly or ignore. My wife works in healthcare and she gets upset when moms on Twitter/Facebook post like they're experts in vaccines and claim a vaccination can put your kids on the spectrum.

Sorry your kids had a reaction...just get them through it and hopefully it won't bother them next round.

You replied when I was posting my reply...neat...the forums have life!

Yeah...so when you get sick, your white blood cells swarm the invaders and respiratory infections produce more mucus...and phlegm which contains white blood cells that are fighting the infection.

My guess is, the kids had a reaction to the shot...their immune systems are fighting the invaders and that's causing the respiratory reaction. Hopefully they get over it in a few days and not much longer. Another possibility, if it's not a reaction to the shot is that they became more susceptible to stuff they were exposed to after they received the injection. We breath germs all the time...perhaps, they only have so many white blood cells to go around and the shot makes them less reactive to germs at school for a few days? I really don't know...just speculating.

When my wife told me that she was pregnant, I told her it was just symptoms.

Nearly 19 years later, those symptoms are keeping me in the poor house.

Yes, there is a small number of “live” vaccines that may make some people a little achy, but thank goodness you didn’t get the real thing. Quit yer bitching.

High fever
Yellow skin (jaundice)
Bleeding
Shock
Organ failure
Severe yellow fever disease can be deadly. If you develop any of these symptoms, see a healthcare provider immediately.
Among those who develop severe disease, 30-60% die.

Don’t be one of those dopes that scares young moms and others because of your ignorance or willful disregard for decades of science that keeps our babies safe from the most dreadful and thankfully now preventable scourges that afflicted past generations.

Only, I suppose, you're not technically "contagious". But from the perspective of your own body, you might as well have it.

Uh, sorry. Just, no--getting similar symptoms to the flu is not "virtually indistinguishable" from getting the flu. Perhaps they actually got the flu? This does happen. Not from the vaccine, though--just that it was ineffective for them that year, or they already had it.

If you have the flu, you know it. The vaccine does not give you the flu or make you sick. It's simply impossible.
 
I'd rather have a stuffy nose and a cough for a couple of days than the flu. The vaccine allows your body to build up a resistance to the flu strains going around; you may get side-effects as this happens. The alternative is simply getting the flu. You might be able to avoid it, even for years, but at some point you'll get it and you'll wish you had gotten the vaccine.

Don't be stupid, get the shot. I'm getting mine next weekend.

I look at it this way. If I get the flu shot, it's 100% going to make me feel like crap for several days right afterwards. Then it's 50/50 chance whether I still get the flu that year or not.

But if I don't get the flu shot, I'm not going to suffer that crap feeling I get right after the flu shot. And there's still 50/50 chance I get the flu or not that year. And it's strange that the year I get the flu is usually the year I got the flu shot more often than not.

Would you like a tour of some of the labs I have worked in? (lol--not that I can do that, now--but this does speak to some ignorance about how....well many things work in this world. It isn't all computer chips, you know?)

And, sorry: vaccines alone still mark a far, far, far greater human achievement than computers can over hope to match. ...but then let's toss all that other "not-high-tech stuff" we can do now with transgenics and synthetic life and all that other "super-easy and not-at-all clean things" with seriously no type of scientific or engineering rigor to insure that it is properly represented by great human achievement.

ENDORSED! You know, your kids could have gotten something else. It's hardly a study you have based your judgement on. And have you thought about the possibility that your kids might have gotten something much worse if they hadn't gotten the vaccine? You should not rush to judgment and make up your mind based on this. And if they get a flu shot next year, see what happens. If you don't have them get vaccinated next your you're rolling the dice and I don't think the odds are with you on this.

I got my shot already this year. My arm got sore for a couple days and had a black and blue mark of some distinction, which I've never had before. I think these reactions are because the woman who gave me the shot was a newbie. She had that vibe. I'm still glad I got the shot. I hate being sick!!!!!

You forget the actually relevant part, in that both 50/50 chances (also not an accurate number), are not equal.

flu w/ vaccine: miserable but rarely life-threatening
flu w/o vaccine: desperately ill, potentially life-threatening.

Sure, it sucks that the flu still kills hundreds-thousands per year! (because it does), but that's way better than tens and hundreds of thousands per year, right?
