I've recently tried to take better care of my body including my teeth so I started flossing. The problem is that now my gums really hurt after I floss. Is this normal? Will the pain eventually go away? Or is something wrong?
yeah it hurts and will bleed for the first week or so... its just becuase you're gums aren't used to it and arent healthy. after flossing your gums will get healthy and used to it and stop bleeding and stop hurting.
Rinsing with a solution of warm salt water helps to reduce the pain somewhat. The water should only be mildly saline -- maybe a teaspoon or two in a small glass.
Listerine is also good to rinse with after flossing. For a good lesson on why you should floss, rent the movie "Kingpin" and check out the 30 second flossing sceen with Woody and an amish guy
