Great another government program, just what we need. Wonder if laboratory lobbies put in a few well placed bribes to see this through?

Simple solution is making them work for it. Solves more problems than drugs as it's hard to work high. Solves fraud. Deterioration of skills. And actually is a productive activity.

Already talked about in another thread a while back. That's also unconstitutional according to our expert libs.

They already earned their handouts. Making them fulfill any requirements to obtain them is a blatant violation of their basic human rights.

Really? I guess I'll go back and read that tripe when I have time but even FDR made them work.

Laboratories? You don't need labs to run drug test nowadays, there's a couple really good instant kits like InstaCup that only take a few minutes and you have results on the spot. From there any positives can be backed up by more thorough laboratory test if needed.

I agree with this. If they do public service in order to stay on welfare, than I would be 100% against any drug testing.

As far as I am concerned, if they can show up to a park and plant some trees, or clean up some trash on the freeway...then they can do a line on Saturday night, and I wont give a shit.

If they sit on the couch watching Oprah and car insurance commercials Monday-Friday, then I have no problem testing them and denying benefits if they piss hot.

So the government should now encourage drug use?

The government should become an employer for those who would not be employable in the private sector? If somebody pisses hot, gets fired from his job, the government should step in and pay that person to do menial work, with money confiscated from the public?

I am all for this. If you are on some type of public assistance, you should be subject to random testing.
Come up dirty once, no benefits for 1 year.
Come up dirty twice, no benefits for 3 years.
Come up dirty three times, no benefits ever.

I wouldn't prosecute anyone, just limit/remove their benefits.

I was in the military for 12 years, subject to random testing. If I came up positive once, I had to go to rehab. Twice, I got kicked out. No benefits/retirement.

I have worked for the state of California for 21 years. I am subject to random testing. If I come up positive once, I lose my job. If I get a DUI, I lose my job.

I've put way more into this country and the state of California than any welfare recipient has.

People don't apply for Welfare as a Career choice, but out of necessity.

Bullshit. It's a multi-generational trap. If your parents are on it, you get it and you get the check for life and your kids too. People deride others who want to get a job when they can get a check for nothing at all. I've seen and heard it, and it's not uncommon.

There is genuine need for a social safety network, but putting any qualifications on it seems to be anathema to many.

...and if they do that and have a few bucks left over?

They shouldn't have any left over. What we ought to have is a cashless system with limitations on what can be purchased. No premium channels, no cigarettes. Only things that are needed should be covered. Want them to have a big HDTV? Buy them one.

This, this, this.

When I got out of the Army, I worked two jobs and took 6 units.
One of the jobs was at an section 8 apartment complex filled with welfare recipients.
They lived in 2 bedroom apartments with rent to own furniture and drove newer (but not new) cars.
I lived in a studio apartment with yard sale furniture and drove a 15 year old, $750 car.

They would constantly give me a hard time because I drove a shitty car, lived in a shitty place and worked two jobs. The suggested I be like them and be a freeloader. They live like that on purpose.

And hey... bonus... Interstate Commerce clause applies, since most drugs are imported.

Government can force us to buy insurance because of the clause, they can force us to buy a drug test under this clause.

Liblogic for the win.
