A city commissioner in Florida was charged on Friday with second-degree murder after fatally shooting a man he suspected of stealing a hatchet from his shop.

The grand jury indictment came about two weeks after the commissioner, Michael Dunn, 47, of Lakeland, Fla., confronted a man and then shot him with a handgun as the man was leaving the store. The man, Christobal Lopez, 50, died at the scene.

I’ve been following this locally. He tried the stand your ground defense which was thrown out by the judge. This was cold blooded murder based on the store video.

I don't think it was. OTOH, it depends on what Florida law says about killing people who are stealing your property at the time. It depends on how the jury feels about that, as well.

I don’t think there have been any SYG “good shoots” here in Florida.

The shooter here will probably try to say he was defending himself since the victim had a machete/hatchet. That’s going to be difficult since the shooter was pulling on the vic’s T-shirt trying to pull him back in or keeping him from leaving. All the shooter had to do was call 911 for police. One dead and one in prison all over shoplifting a low priced item in a store.
