I thought I had a bad floppy so i put a new one it the system, but this one is not reconized either.
When I try to open a floppy,I goto my computer then double click on the "a" drive and the computer locks up for a few minutes(no mouse movement and keyboard functions dont work). Then it comes back saying "a" drive is not ready or accessable?I put a new floppy drive in but this one does the same thing.I heard it click, then thats it.I havent used it in awhile so I dont know how long its been bad.Light wont come on either. It shows up in device manager.Connections are good.
Ok just double checking on what side of the floppy drive does the red band on the flate cable go?I pulled it off thinking it only goes on one way but to my surprise it will go on both ways,i dont think its the problem because it was doing it before i pulled the cable off.Just curious.
Geez,Im having problem after problem here.

Red side of the ribbon cable always installs closest to the power connector. This is true wioth all ribbon cables, in my experience.

Windows may detect the floppy okay because it may be set so that it does NOT check to see if the floppy drive exists on every boot. Under System properties, Performance tab, File System button, click the Floppy disk tab. You probably do not have a check in the box to "Search for new floppy..." which could be why you think Windows sees it okay.

The power connector is on top of the ribbon cable? I'm not sure if I have ever seen a floppy like that. I guess at this point, you're stuck just trying iot both ways to see what happens. I'm guessing you probably already did that, though....

Oh yeah...something I ran into the other day and forgot to mention. Does your floppy connector have 3 connectors on it? (1 for sys bd, 2 for floppy drives?) If so, the cable probably has a small portion twisted near one of the connectors. Make sure you are using that connector for the drive. when I setup my sister's PC about a week or so ago, I used the wrong floppy connector on the cable and it wouldn't work. Check to see if that makes a difference.

I ran into that problem when I was building a pc for my uncle a few months ago...it turned out to be the connector on the motherboard. just rma'd and the new board worked like a champ.

That was it!!! I was using the wrong connector!!
It must have been that way since I built this thing because I never pulled it off before.
Thanks a million!
