Floppy Heatsink - Retention clip not secure

Hello,

My old rig is an ABIT TH7II RAID (socket 478) board with an Intel 1.7 cpu and stock HSF. Not the one in my sig btw. I have been having problems with the mobo beeping due to overheating. So I just cleaned her up with the ol' shop vac and tried reapplying some AS5 to the processor. When I went to reattach the HS clip I noticed one side was not secure after I attached the top clip and turned the levers to apply pressure. So after further inspection I found that two of the little pins in in the corners of bracket are not holding the bracket to the mother board. I checked the manual and don't see a pic of these pins or the instruction on how to mount the bracket to the board. The instructions cover installing the cpu putting the HS and Fan on and attaching the clip to the bracket but nothing on the bracket itself. I dont know if these tiny stupid pins are broken off or have something on the backside holding them on. Its been like 5 years since I put this together so I don't remember if these are just expansion pins that compress on the way down and then pop open on the other side and this part of the pin has broken off. I dont want to take out the mobo if I don't have to. So does anyone know where I can find these cheap plastice pins or is there a real cheap replacement HSF? Its in an old palo alto case that is a pain to take appart and remove the MOBO from. I've thought about gluing the retention bracket to the mobo but that would be a last resort.

To describe the little pin that easily comes out of the hole in the bracket...

its about a 1 mm wide plastic pin thats about 1.5cm long that has about a 4 mm or so head. profile would look like a T with a longer vertical leg that was in the bracket and the mobo

Im thinking there was some kind of a thing that compressed and then expanded when pushed through the hole in the bracket and mobo but I just cant remember. Any recommendations on a cheap cheap way to fix it without having to remove the mobo?

Thanks,

B

If the pin goes through the motherboard, you'll have no choice but to remove the motherboard. If the pin is just for the heatsink, it would really be easiest to just replace the heatsink, since they're so cheap now: link. Of course, if it's only for the heatsink, you could also use a bread tie.;)

There are 4 plastic pins that secure the bracket to the motherboard. It looks like they go in from the front and being this board is so old I dont want to put more than 5 bucks into it or else I will replace it entirely. Does anyone know if this type of pin is standard? I will check around to see if I can find some replacements, any idea where I might be able to find some?

Got the part and installed it in about 2 mintues then put back the modest OC on the cpu. And no overheat problems... amazing what a secure HS can do. I had to rip the old one off as the pins are not reusable. The bit that holds the bracket to the motherboard is part of the bracket itself. the pin is just straight and expands that so it grabs the board. Rinkydink design but at least I did not have to pull the motherboard. Kinda wish I fried the system that would have convinced the wife we needed a replacent.
