So after using a friend's floor jack, I noticed that mine behaved in a different way. On his, you can pump the jack up and wherever you leave the handle, it will stay in place and will not move when weight is applied.

I have a 3 Ton Craftsman jack that I got from Sears as a Jack/Stand/Creeper set and when I pump mine and put weight on it (jacking up the car or even me standing on it) the bar will move up until it is 90 degrees pointing straight up.

I tried to do the whole air purging maintenance step but still no change. Is this normal for the model or is something wrong? If something is up, does anyone know of a fix?

Having tripped over a floor jack handle before, I wish mine would rise up on it's own.

Is it dropping the load?

Nope. Luckily it stays put under load and has never decreased its height. The bad thing is when I try to jack it from the center, it will apply a good amount of pressure to the rear fender and would most likely dent it.

maybe it is and it's just not noticable - could be the valve is leaking backwards just enough to push the rod up

must be this.

Definitely. Thing is do you guys think this is an easily fixable problem or is the product defective. I don't have the receipt anymore and it is not a Craftsman hand tool to I doubt Sears will honor any warranty on it. BUT there could be a liability factor on their part...

Put a piece of foam on it and get on with your life.

LOL that's some ingenuity there....... I probably would have made it worse by suggesting a cinder block to hold down the handle

Both of mine have return springs. They wrapped the handles in foam though. It returns to maybe 10-15 degrees from vertical from the spring alone.
