Flir Systems Inc., FLIR +1.31% one of the best-known manufacturers in the field, in July introduced a $349 iPhone accessory that allows the smartphone's display to show glowing heat signatures of people, animals, lights and other objects. Its Flir One looks a bit like a standard protective case for a smartphone. The camera-equipped black sleeve wraps around an iPhone 5 or 5s, allowing a user to point at objects while viewing images on its display. Meanwhile, a group of industry veterans at a startup called Seek Thermal this fall plan to begin selling an add-on camera for smartphones for about $100 less. Rather than a sleeve, the company plans to sell a small thermal-camera module that plugs into the bottom of a smartphone. In a recent demonstration, a prototype Seek Thermal camera generated color thermal images that can be contrasted with conventional images using a split-screen feature.

This is bad ass! I always wanted an IR camera, but they were too expensive. Now I just need to by an iphone 5 and the flir unit and I can do all kinds of stuff!

Question: I don't have a smartphone and have no reason for one other than this flir unit. It uses an app. How can I get the app on the iphone without a cell contract? Can I use the smartphone to access my WIFI and install the app that way or do smartphones have a USB connector that I can plug into the computer and upload the app that way?

Set up an apple account, no phone contract needed.

You really think once the tech is on the market it won't be available for android phones? Save yourself $300 and don't buy an iphone.

Actually if you read the article it says in the fall that Seek Thermal will make a Flir $100 less. Maybe I'll wait unless I can get an iphone cheap. I'm watching a few on eBay right now. Although the Seek Thermal version has like a fancy image comparison app and I don't want that. I just want the whole screen to be the Flir.

If I remember from the produce announcement right, there is an Android version... but it only works with specific phones.

Looks cool. Only problem is I blew way more money on a full-size FLIR last year.

Cheapest Flir I've seen on eBay was around $900. So $450 for an iphone + $350 for the Flir One= $800. Forgetaboutit

How much are the competitors phone!

Yeah...also if people actually were paying for the device they use and not subsidizing or financing it all the time, almost nobody would be walking around with an iPhone, S5, Note3 etc.

OT, but this is one of those areas Apple really pioneered. Which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your point of view.

When I bought smart devices from 2002-2008, I had to buy them with the normal subsidy. That meant something like the PPC-6600 was $500 on contract. $649 - $150 subsidy. That's also why they were nowhere near as popular.

Then Apple comes along in 2008 and says "Smart phones have $450 subsidies now!" And all of the sudden every Tom, Dick and Harry has one and is ruining bandwidth.

I never seen a thermal scope for rifles. You sure that wasn't night vision? I don't know why people want NV for rifles when I believe you can't even hunt at night.

You can protect your livestock on private land from nocturnal predators legally in many states. He has something like this.

I think it is great that more people have access to technology and information at their fingertips. I think carriers were way too slow to realize that their network would very quickly get congested and bandwidth would be at a premium.
