Flight Anxiety.Ways to deal with it?

As of late flying has been causing some anxiety. The idea of a giant tube flying around in the sky has all of a sudden begun to be unsettling whereas before it used to be fine. Causing a bit of a problem now. Just wondering what there is that can be done about it.

I'm thinking some headphones (IEM) and lots of sleeping pills or maybe going to the doc and seeing what they can do. Anyone have any previous experiences with this?

Those little bottles of Vodka and the free orange juice on the plane have a purpose...

Drink? I dunno.. I've fealt fear on 2 of ~80 or more flights that I've been on.

Once was on a Chinook helicopter and I saw flares shooting off the side of the helicopter. The second time I was on a C-130 and once again I saw flares shooting off the side.

That's one of the benefits of being severely, chronically depressed... I'd prefer to die... anyway, if a drink or five isn't working, talk to a doctor about it and see if you can't get a prescription for something or other.

I would start losing it until flares start shooting off the side of the 747 I'm in.... 😛

It's to lower the chances of getting hit by a SAM. Which implies that someone in the area might be shooting them :Q

Just realize that flying is much, much safer than rocketing around on the ground at 70MPH in tin can surrounded by other, incredibly incompetent drivers in other tin cans...

Goto the doctor they should be able to prescribe you some Xanax or something similar to calm you down for the flight....probably .25-.5mg just enough to relax you.

Yup, the actual chances that a SAM was locked on are very small. Chances are that a signature from something else was detected. At least I can hope.

Actually, if you look at total time spent by a human in a plane and in a car, your chance of death/hour is almost identical.

sweet is that allowed? prolly is...
but as long as the attendant doesnt make a big deal out of it...im gonna stock those up. Not that i have anxiety or fear... im just a drunk bastard.

Seriously, put in ear plugs (foam kind) before you walk into the terminal--the kind you can still hear through, but which attenuate the volume (you can still converse with them in). Keep them in the whole flight.
For some reason they are very calming, and alleviate anxiety.

Leave early for the airport. Take your time. Listen to mellow music. If you're usually in a hurry, make yourself slow down--that means taking extra time for yourself (you're worth it, aren't you?!). All those things are non-anxious activities.

It also doesn't hurt to say to yourself that there's nothing you can do to keep the airplane from crashing (and believe it!), so you might as well relax.
There really is a high level of anxiety for most people when they fly, though nobody admits it, or is always even aware of it about themselves.
Some people pray the whole flight; some get drunk; some try to divert their attention in various ways. But go back to the first sentence in this paragraph--it works.
Good luck.

Yeah usually I can rationalize everything and get by, but this seems to be the one thing thats able to get to me now. I might see if the doc can hook me up with something to relax.

I've become the same way in the last few years........................I'm usually good and trashed before I can get on a plane these days. Drinking definately helps...........

Go to a doctor if you want other suggestions...

Yeah I think I will. Was just wondering if anyone else had been to see one about it, don't wanna walk in like a street pharmacist asking for pills.
