Flickery LCD

I have a VAIO R505TL that flickers often.

Sometimes it works properly, but most of the time, it "flickers." Basically, the screen get a bit dimmer and behaves as if the refresh rate is somewhere around 15 Hz :Q where it should be 60 Hz.

It is not a driver issue. I sometimes get this during bootup screen also.

It goes away once in a while. It seems to like to "cool off." When I shut down the machine and leave it cold for a few minutes, it likes to go back to normal mode. And then it will flicker again.

Any thoughts? I really don't want to deal with Sony support.. *gasp* 🙂

I Think gunbuster is correct, it sounds like a backlight is going out. Backlights are fluorescent lamps and they tend to flicker shortly before failing.

Good Luck

refresh rates are pretty unimportant on LCDs b/c of the way the image is created on LCDs (too lazy to explain and probably someone else will explain it better anyway).

My SGI 1600SW does something similar. It flickers when Win2K "dims" the screen when you bring up the Shutdown menu.

As for the refresh rate, it is kind of a misnomer when it comes to LCD's because the backlight is always on. That is why they are less stressful on the eyes.

Does it cost a lot to replace my backlight lamp thingy? Does it take a long time to replace it?

Does it make a difference if I replace it after a while? I'm too busy right now and too lazy to take this to Sony support.
