Hey guys -

I'm having a bit of a problem...

3 weeks ago: Bought an ATI Radeon at best buy for $99. Worked great - but noticed some flickering here and there. 5 days later, the card went berzerk and wouldn't display anything properly anymore.

2 weeks ago: Returned that one, and got a replacement. Worked GREAT. Rock solid picture.

1 week ago: See the All-in-wonder radeon on sale for $135, decide to get that instead. Returned the regular radeon, put this in. No problems yet - but again I am getting some little flickering here and there, and if I highlight a graphic on a web page (so that it goes half-blue?) the flickering there is pretty intense. Again, I'm pretty sure I did not see ANY of this with the "good" radeon that I returned.

Any thoughts?!? What is going on with these ATI cards... I'm pissed that I took back the one that was working perfectly and now am getting wierdness again. I don't think this is any kind of external interference issue...?

Anyone else?

Wluk, is yours an all in wonder or a regular radeon that's flickering?

Used a Radeon 64 VIVO myself for a year. Liked the card a lot. Never had that trouble myself or heard of the problem. Sorry.

Just curious, have you hooked up a different monitor to one of the flickering cards??

There is a shimmering problem with some Radeons using Win2k. If your running Win2k do a search at the Rage3d forums for a work around.

EDIT: I tried to go over to Rage3d but their site is down. For Win2k, what was listed is you have to add a reg key value. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE| SYSTEM|ati2mtg|device0, (or whichever device corresponds with your vid card if more than 1 is listed) and add the registry key GCOOPTION_SlowerEdge with a Dword value of 1. Fixed the Radeon shimmer on 2 of my Win2k boxes but I also remember reading that it didn?t help all people. Try it if you want it doesn?t hurt anything if it doesn?t work but I would back up the registry before mucking with it

There was one for people running Win9x but I don?t know what that one is but Raid On Tweaker has the fix for Win9X built in.

Thanks for the info Slapstick, I'll check that out.

As a matter of fact, I am running w2k but what is bugging me is that this is the same sort of problem I saw with the original radeon that went bad. But I am going to feel like a total schmuck returning yet another card to best buy. hehe. I do know what I'm doing, and I'm confident that the first card went belly up on its own (I was literally using the computer and suddenly the display went nuts and stayed that way)... this is just odd. The shimmering on highlight is the biggest problem with this one, although I remember even my original all-in-wonder 5 years ago did some odd things too.

Yoshi, no - haven't switched montiors, but have been using the same one and everything was rock solid with the regular radeon I had "in the middle" of my upgrade madness.

I also picked up the AIW Radeon, (Best Buy deal a few weeks ago) to replace a Radeon Le, I like the card but there are a couple of bugs, one is the shimmering that the reg hack fixed for me, (and on another system) I noticed it most on light colored back grounds another problem you may run into is several channels, namely 20 wont come in at all. It?s a bug with the drivers which ATI finally acknowledged so maybe there will be a fix coming. My work around was to plug a VCR into the card and use it?s tuner for channel 20, (plus the benefit of watching tapes while hanging out at AT forums) Also the new beta drivers, 281?s, seem to crash MMC a lot but the 276 are stable on my system
