they aren't particularly warm, they are useless on a windy or rainy day, and the softness is gone after a month.

why do they exist?

I like my fleece jackets. They are good for indoors in the winter (I'm cheap with the thermostat), and for non-windy/non-rainy days, and for using under a weatherproof jacket if I want to go with layered protection.

Mine our warm; I wore one today to work (around 45 degress this morning). Too warm for a down or winter coat, and too cold to not wear anything. Fleece is just perfect.

I've had the exact opposite experience.

Then again, I also know the limits. With my fleece jacket, it's not an all-weather jacket. It's not meant to be worn alone when it's 10ºF outside. If it's somewhere close to the freezing temp, and the wind isn't constantly above 20mph, it works perfectly.

If it's super cold or exceptionally windy, I usually wear my hoodie under the jacket.

If you are trying to use only a fleece jacket in the absolute worst conditions possible, you need to rethink your concept of jackets.
The worse the conditions, the more likely you need more than one layer if you are utilizing any kind of jacket that is based around layering. The entire idea behind fleece jackets is for warmth when it's colder than what a basic wind-breaker or similar type jacket would help with, but not so cold that you need massive bulk. Look at any company that specializes in outdoor activity gear, and you'll see exactly how they advertise the concept of layering. Wear a fleece with a shell over it, and you'll then be able to handle most of the worst conditions found at sea level/ground level. Go climbing and find worse winds and what not, you'll need even more layering.

Wool is the superior fabric jacket. I used to wear fleece while whitewater paddling though, cause they don't absorb water, and they're cheap. For street use, nothing beats wool.

I got a columbia fleece that I've had for like 10 years now. Works great for me. I wore it this morning and it was -4F outside. Only time I need something else is if the wind is ripping along at like 15+ MPH and I need something to cut it or if it's pouring down rain. Then I'll slap the goretex shell over it and be happy as a clam.

As others have said, get better fleece. I take part in training exercises in -5 to -15 temps and my fleece keeps me warm. If necessary, I'll throw a light rain jacket over as a wind breaker.

my old fleece jackets have been relegated to indoors duty and they still suck.

^^^ This.

My Denali is close to 15years old but still gets the job done.

Yeah, my TNF Denali is over 10 years old. I did have to send it in to TNF to get a zipper repaired and not only did they replace the zipper but relined all of my pockets(had some holes in a couple of them).

I agree with your findings.
Let me add other disadvantages.

- Gather lint, hair, dirt particles
- Suck against wind

I have a classic North Face fleece jacket.

It is very warm compared to other fabrics as long as it's not windy though.

I've worn the same fleece jacket for ... 8 years? I freakin LOVE it. It's falling apart though. Zipper is gone from one pocket, zipper handles are gone from all pockets, main zipper is worn out and doesn't work anymore, etc etc etc
