I ordered a bunch online before from DPS, but could never get brave enough to finish a bottle (it tastes like sht!).

It is a source of omega-3 and 6 fatty acids. It is very good for you.
 
I put a good amount of it in my mayonnaise. I mix a little lemon juice with it too, and it really helps balance out the flavor. I actually like the taste now, and whenever I have the unfortunate opportunity to try "normal" mayo, it tastes incredibly bland to me.

If you have a specialty store like Whole Foods, Wild Oats, or even Akin's, you can probably find such products with it already in there. They of course sell it by itself as well, but a lot of people have trouble just taking it by itself. I don't mind it though.
 
Well, peas and berries have a lot of omega 3/6. I'm not sure if the oil is really necessary if you eat those. My cats get their omega 3 / 6 from fish oil in their cat food, in case you want to take that route!

What?

Peas and berries don't contain omega 3/6(at least, in significant quantities). They're fatty acids.. have you ever run across an oily berry or pea? 😛

Almonds, walnuts, sesame and sunflower seeds are excellent sources.. and flax seeds, of course. 😉
 
Is it possible to get the benefits of Flaxseed Oil just by eating flax seed, or is it one of those things our body's can't digest from its natural source?

You mean in terms of how I feel? The flax oil was only a small change in a suite of changes I made in my diet; I went from eating what I thought were horrible tasting foods from the grocery store to fresh organic foods from markets, places like Wild Oats (they are incredibly diverse in their products), etc.

I'm pretty certain you cannot, for this reason: Plant propagation worked in large part by animals that ate the plant, passed the seeds, and thus to another area suitable for germination. If the seeds were completely digested the world might not have seen plant domestication, and all the plants so pervasive today might have remained indigenous to only a single region.

Anyway, most of these seeds have enzyme inhibitors I believe, so the stomach enzymes (pepsin in our base) have little to no effect.

That certainly isn't universal to all plants, though.

Eating flax seed is going to be better than eating none at all. You will enevitably chew some up and break their shells.

But, you're right.. I mean, just think of the flax seed oil as being concentrated flax seeds. You'd have to eat pounds of them to get as much oil as is in a bottle of flax oil.

You can get it in capsules, mostly because it's much easier for most people to eat than the straight form.. but you can also get just bottles of it.

It's pretty spendy stuff.

ok well more specifically what health benefits may i recieve from incorporating this into my diet.

Well, I don't like to air personal problems out in the open, but perhaps others can benefit from my experience as well.

I had a lot of digestive problems; sour stomach mostly, nausea, etc. It seemed no matter what I ate that I'd pay some gastrointestinal consequence later on. Compounding this with apples that were hard as rocks, cottage cheese that tasted more like water than a dairy product, and countless other poor experiences from the grocery store, I sought alternatives.

I had gone to the doctor, and they gave me the usual: "You might be gluten intolerant, lactose intolerant" ad nauseum. Rather than assimilate a regimen of pharmaceuticals I decided to change my diet. I started eating fresh foods, and nothing out of a box. I eat absolutely no preserved foods at home, and I eat only organic (my preference to organic isn't part of the discussion, but I'll touch more on that in a minute). I started incorporating things like flax oil into my normal foods, because it was an easy way to make sure I took it.

I'll fast forward a bit. I did this a few years ago, and I've never felt better. I'm familiar with post hoc ergo propter hoc, but all of my "allergies" are gone. I can't relate any success specifically to flax oil, but it seems it was almost certainly a contributor.

In regards to organic, I pay the extra cost for many reasons, but I largely do so due to the taste; everything, in my experience, simply tastes better. It tastes fresh, earthy (especially in the produce--tomatoes actually taste like fresh tomatoes), and there is more variety. So, independent of my personal convictions to organic, and independent of my deep appreciation for those food producers who dedicate themselves to sustainable agriculture, I would still pay the added price for the taste and variety.

Don't forget that the shelf life of Flax seed oil is not long, only like 6 months after opening and IIRC 8-10 months unopened. I bought mine from DPSNutrition, couldn't tell you the brand though (it was Sun something). Just do a search for it.
