Flatmate sleeping in living room [ANNOYING]

Why not just turn the TV on and wake him up whenever you feel like it? If he is in the shared space, he has no right to privacy...

This. When you want to watch TV late at night (or even if you don't want to ), just turn it on anyways.

Also, I'd have him pay half the heating bill and then split the other half between the rest of you.

If none of that works, then kick him out. I'm guessing that with the amount that the heating bill is reduced, you won't have to pay much more each month.

This is starting to really piss me off. My flatmate has started sleeping in the living room on the couch under the heat pump because he thinks his own bedroom is too cold at night. He started doing it a few weeks ago and after about a week I spoke to him about it and he stopped. I just got back from a trip to see my family for 10 days and while I was gone he started sleeping on the couch on a regular basis.

Not only is it a total invasion of shared living space, but he keeps the fucking heat pump running all fucking night. Our power bill has shot up to $400/month (typical house this size should be $200-$250) because of his fucking heat pump habits. And during the day he never seems to go to class anymore, he just sits in front of the TV 14 hours a day with the FUCKING heat pump running (it's going nearly 24/7). All because he can't handle the fucking cold. Pussy-ass Canadian.

So how do you guys suggest I broach the topic with him? And before I get a bunch of keyboard commandos criticizing me for complaining instead of taking action, like I said I've already spoken to him about it and I obviously intend to again tomorrow morning. I just wanted to rant and ask for suggestions about how I can make sure there is no doubt left in his stupid Canadian head about this topic - no sleeping in shared space. It's bullshit.

Oh and it's not just the power bill that bothers me. It's also just plain fucking annoying that he's constantly asleep on the couch. I'm a night owl, but his selfish behaviour precludes me from watching TV at night (not that I ever would, but sometimes I'd like to use the couch) and he's always asleep in the morning when the girls wake up and get their breakfast, so they can't watch the morning news or whatever. Just plain selfish.

Cliff's notes:
Flatmate has started sleeping on the couch in the living room instead of using his bedroom because he's a pussy Canadian who can't handle a relatively mild winter.

hes a pussy Canadian but you're the one thats letting him do it for weeks? Sounds like you're the pussy.

😛 I didn't mean it in general. It's puzzling to me though, surely Canadians can handle a bit of cold.

He must not be a real Canadian, we can handle the cold!

As a Canadian, I am offended by this thread.
didn't you know we hibernate in the winter, eh?
😛

All of these. I'm a Vancouverite, and -4C is nothing. Tell him to buy a tuque and a Hudson's Bay blanket for sleeping at night and turn off the goddamned heat pump or you'll beat him with a hockey stick.

Your room/flat mate sounds like a little bitch. Tell him to man up and deal with the cold like everyone else and put on more clothes or use more blankets.

Alternatively, take whatever the heating bill would normally be without his "habit" and give him a separate bill for the extra heat that he's using.

I'd set the thermostat to 60F, and lock it in place. That's about 2 degrees warmer than I like it, so I'd be compromising. If his sleeping on the sofa wasn't affecting what I wanted to do, I'd ignore it. If it was affecting what I wanted to do, I'd dump him off the couch, and send him to his room.

you're the pussy posting this shit on a tech forum. grow a set, nancy.

This. Sounds like you are the pussy here, not the Canuck. You live there as well, so make sure your voice is heard and listened to. Don`t let someone else make your living experience less enjoyable.

I would wake his ass up and have him move every time I wanted to watch tv. You wouldn't be the one bring rude, he is. If he doesn't like it his ass can go back to his room. If he doesn't move when you turn the tv on, throw his ass on the floor so you can sit down. Cook breakfast when you get up in the morning and turn the tv on, again making him move.

He needs a blanket or space heater for his cold natured self.

Talk to him. Tell him he can't sleep in the living room and tell him all the reasons why.

Why haven't you done this already? Why are you wasting your time bitching like a puss-puss to strangers on the internet instead?

Are you that weak?

I'd start walking around the flat naked, complaining about the heat. Maybe once you've let the old brains out to rest on the couch a few times, he'll retreat back to his room.

I have considered the passive-aggressive approach but I don't think it's going to be the most effective.

Stop being so damn polite, turning on the tv and watching it in the common living room is not being rude or passive aggressive on your part, tell that lazy canuck to get to his room if he's gonna sleep and if it's too cold tell him to do what most Canadians would do (grab another blanket/comforter)

/rant off
//will have window open in the winter
///sleeping in a cold room with many warm blankets= best sleep ever

his canadian must be confused. nz, being in the southern hemisphere, has backward gravity. it's obviously messed up the canuck's internal navigation systems.

this.

if one of the girls is gross, have her do it and sit on his head.....preferably after working out and not bathing

wtf is a heat pump?

It's a generally inferior climate control system. In the winter, it takes heat from the outside, and puts it inside, and reverses the procedure in the summer. They only work decently in very mild climates.

so he's cold during the day too?
what temperature is the living room with this shit heatpump on all the time? 30°C?

it should be 16-18°C MAX at night

does he use a duvet?
blankets are stupid, winter duvets really keep the heat inside.
and if he sleeps in his underwear it's not enough too, of course.

Heat pump: it's a machine that takes the heat from one side and takes it to the other, using the change of state of a substance to do it.
It's used in:
fridges, air conditioning, cpu cooling (only for benchmarks), or as main house heater (to heat the water you use for the shower and that goes in the radiators).

you should have a termometer in the house to be able to control the internal temperature.

Like I said in the OP, I did. Then I left home for 10 days and when I get back he is back to doing it again.
