For the past 3 years I have been Buying a new 19" flat-panel every 6 month. Always buying the one that was rated #1 for videos and gamming. 6 months ago I got the vp930b from viewsonic, it was supposed to be the revolutionary screen for media -- its not.. it cant compare to my 10yo 17" crt reflex monitor. I'm fed up with watching movie after movie on this screen that turns the DVD into VHS quality. is there any lcd's out there now as good as a CRT? I'm tired of the over hyped reviews everywhere I look. Thanks.

LCDs do not have as high of a contrast ratio as your typical CRT. The consequence is that dark movies will not look as good and that significant effort to optimize is required. Each technology has its drawbacks, which you prefer is somewhat subjective and dependent on you viewing environment. Maybe you're just a crt sort of guy/girl.

If you want a better DVD player test might I recommend you download Zoom Player and DScaler5. If you want a better IQ past that research ffdshow as an add-on to ZPlayer.

Sorry, but I can be watching the same DVD movie on cristal sharp CRT, then switch it to LCD and see how degraded it gets. I used to always say 'wow' when I watch DVD's on a CRT. now with the vp930b its just an 'eh'. the VX2025wm is cheaper than the vp930b, so I have to wonder..

Funny thing is, I played a DVD over the network onto my Maximate 420 laptop that is about 5 years old and its LCD displays a slightly better picture than viewsonic's. I'm beginning to think its my configuration is off. I mean viewsonic is good dont get me wrong, games seem good (no ghosting, nice colors), videos are just satisfactory (main problem for me), but how is that this lcd that I payed $450 for can't defeat an old crappy laptop screen? I also wonder if its beacause this is 19" and 19" sucks. Maybe 17" is the limit for crystal video.

I seen the awesome new lcd screen at bestbuy that was about 42" widescreen. It was so real looking it was as if you were actually at the football game

Are you running analog out from your video card in both cases? VGA prefers crt and DVI prefers LCD, your last statement makes me wonder if your video card has output or driver problems. I run a 37" LCD at 1080p using the config I described. For movies like "Robots", "Shrek", "The Incredibles", or anything in that genre it's the most impressive display I've ever seen and I did a lot of research and display viewing for over 2 years before I bought my display. ffdshow makes a big difference on the darker movies as well, I remember watching "The Matrix" and being disappointed until I optimized my display (I'm still tweaking 6 months after owning it). But, like I said, you may just simply be arranged better for a tubed display. It does have some advantages over lcd.

I know I have a DVI connection right to my geforce 7800 gtx. The lcd always says DVI when I turn it on. I really dont want to go with tube because of the size and heat associated with getting one with the same viewable as my 19". LCD is leet. I am very picky when it comes to quality. What I see as a big difference between tube and the vp930b someone else wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

its too bad i didn't read cnet reviews in the past. tomshardware is complete fraud.

Cnet review demonstraights what I see

"With all these great features, we hoped for great image quality. Unfortunately, this display delivered merely acceptable performance. Its performance on DVDs and games was average, as was its image quality when displaying basic Web and productivity-application material, but it really stumbled on CNET Labs' DisplayMate-based greyscale and colour tests. Greyscale screens showed so much colour that we could clearly see blocks of bluish grey, blocks of greenish grey, and a distinct swath of pink right before the display dropped off to peak white. Colours took on unusual, unnatural-looking tints. The display's uniformity wasn't great either: fans of light were visible in all four corners of the screen."

thanks all for the replies, i will find the best monitor according to cnet and Im sure there wont be disappoinment this time

well frankly, i like my LCD much better then my old CRT. higher rez and better picture quality. i am not an expert in the field, but i did see an article about this new LCD technology which is supposed to be better then CRT in every aspect including contrast and refresh rate.

One thing to consider if you are gaming and watch a lot of movies is getting an lcd with a glossy screen eg. nec 1770gx, some sony monitors and some lg monitors.... Though it can be an annoyance if you're near a window, it makes the appearence that the contrast is higher, making everything look higher quality. The viewsonic 20.1" widscreen is supposed to be great. I'm looking at it for my first gaming build. To answer your question though, the only lcd's that can match crt color reproduction are eizo flexscans and laCie 1-2-3 lcd's. They're also ~$2000.
