No, not asking anyone to breakout their trench-coat and scare the general public ...

Opened a spare Linksys WRT54GL v1.1 (s/n starting CL7C) with stock v4.30.14 firmware. I connected it to the PC via LAN port and with a browser went to 192.168.1.1, at the prompted login I typed xxxxx as the factory default password and was in.

Prior to the above, I d/l DD-WRT dd-wrt.v24_mini_generic.bin as the recommended starting upgrade (needed before dd-wrt.v24_vpn_generic.bin install). Upgraded just fine and the router stated Upgrade Successful.

Acknowledging the success the router rebooted and came up on the dd-wrt.v24_mini_generic.bin firmware. I verified this by re-opening a web browser to 192.168.1.1, but then I hit a brick wall.

If I try to click on anything I am immediately prompted for credentials and the factory default PWD (without a username) doesn't work. I tried to use a username that was the same as the password, but that didn't work either. What am I missing here (other than real success)?

what factory default pwd are you trying to use? The one for dd-wrt or linksys?

Thanks for that information--I was ignorant. I performed an nvram reboot and immediately got prompted to change the login credentials, which I did. I then successfully upgraded the firmware to the vpn variant.

This means this weekend I get to play around with the OpenVPN daemon and see if I can get a mobile device to established a connection to it over the wireless WAN.
