I never flashed the MB on the first system I built back in 1996-97 but I just did because I've been having a problem. The Tyan Tomcat 1 Rev. 4 MB had an Award 4.51 BIOS, designated 3.02 for the Tyan Tomcat and I downloaded the most up-to-date BIOS, version 4.02 and flashed it a few minutes ago. I recently rebuilt the machine and installed Win98SE and have been getting some crackling when recording MP3s through the soundcard from radio on line-in, so decided to flash. I saw a post today from a person who said a similar problem cleared up when they flashed a newer MB BIOS, so I figured it was time to try that.

Problem is that when I go to make changes in the BIOS, there is no highlight to show where the cursor is. I can count my place but that's pretty hard to do. I'm using a completely basic 14" black and white VGA monitor and I never had this problem before. I did save the old BIOS so I guess I can go back to it if I need to, but I'd prefer to find a solution. I suppose it's on the diskette I used to flash. Thanks for any help.

Aha! I found the answer. I already did reset the CMOS by bridging a jumper for 10+ seconds. I did that before even turning on the machine after the flash, per instructions. The whole deal was easy, plenty easy, but no cursor in the BIOS was pretty tough. I must have changed 25 BIOS settings trying to get my cursor back. Speaking of cursors, I'm having a problem right now!! I'm on my other machine, Win2k, and I don't have a blinking cursor while typing this text. Never had that before!! Well, the answer on the Win98 machine I just flashed was to read all the text in the BIOS window. Down below it said Shift + F2 to change color. Voila! I had my choice of 6 or so color schemes. Weird that the default one gave me absolutely no idea where my cursor was. Now to figure out where my cursor went in Anandtech forums... Weird...
