Has anyone tried this new firmware?

Looks promising, but I'm scared to do this until more people have sucessfully done it and have had good results.

Interesting; I have a 2500A on the way from Newegg. I'll let someone else be the test rat though. ;) Is dual-layer media even out yet? They are probably going to be like $5 a disc for quite awhile.

I wonder if DVD XCopy works w/dual layer burners?

Dude that is AWESOME! If everything pans out, I might be picking me up an ~$80 NEC DL burner. :)

Edit: For anyone trying this, make sure your 2500a is set to master on the EIDE chain. Otherwise, you'll get a solid HD LED problem and the DVD tray may keep ejecting everytime you reboot. If it is set to master, everything looks like it should work out just fine.

You mean NEC 2510A (dual layer).

Anyway, with so few DL media around today, it makes little sense to update the f/w now. Adding 12X write support would be more interesting.

If this works it would be awesome! I wonder if the new update makes it compatible with iTunes?

As I posted in the other thread...

It's in the early stages of testing now, but the signs are good that it should work. By the time Dual Layer media becomes widely available, I expect the firmware gurus will have most of the kinks worked out. Also note, it seems like the Dual Layer writable media may be even less compatible (playback glitches) in the average DVD player than the current -R/+R and RW formats.

No reason at all to flash your drive right now.

NEC 2500a DVD-RW will do dual layer!

There is no reason to flash your drive now, unless you have DL media. By all accounts, the DL fw is early beta and burning regular single layer -/+R/RW media is currently worse with the DL beta firmware. The DL firmware doesn't have any of the improved writing strategies that the single layer fw does.

A recent post on HardOCP:

Dual Layer DVD Hack:

I have gotten links to this NEC 2500A to 2510A hack all morning that claims a ?beta? firmware update will update your single layer NEC 2500A DVD burner to a dual layer NEC 2510A burner.

Since so many people sent me this, and I happen to have a NEC 2500A here in the underground bunker, I ran out and grabbed some Dual Layer media and tested this out. I flashed the drive with this beta firmware, everything looked right in Nero. Nero reported the extra space available for burning so everything looked good. I tested the drive out and my drive will not burn ANY media now. It still plays CDROMs and DVDs just fine, but it will no longer burn any type of media ( single / double ). Just a little FYI, this may be working for some folks, but it didn?t work for me.

Works flawlessly for me, nero says its dual layer and guess what i just did with this supposidly unrealable beta

I JUST BACKED UP 3 GIG OF MY MUSIC AND MY DIGITAL PHOTO ARCHIVES WITHOUT 1 PROBLEM on a DVDRW and i even checked it for errors and it found none, This firmware is safe if you follow the insructions

I'm more interested in how well it can burn DL DVDs, Schadenfroh. Maybe burn one and tell us if it plays back in a PS2?

As I said, the DL firmware does not yet have all the optimized writing strategies of the other currently available firmwares. It may work perfectly for you, but in general you will be more likely to have more issues with certain types of media and playback issues on certain machines.

I have this drive and when DL media hits the stores at a reasonable price (less than $13, I hope), I will give it a try. There isn't any legitimate reason to be using this firmware at this point, unless you just want to try it for the heck of it.

I've had this drive for a few months now and have been following the discussions in the NEC hardware and firmware forums and testing various firmwares to get the best results on my media. If you read the discussions on this DL firmware, you'll see that no one is getting better results on standard single-layer media using it. They're getting worse results and in some cases the DL firmware causes other problems. Most people who try the DL firmware for "testing purposes" or just for the heck of it revert back to one of the more mature, optimized single-layer firmwares for everyday burning after their tests.

w00t, i'm glad I got myself this drive a couple of weeks ago :) The fact that it only cost me £60 had a small part to play in that decision ;)
