Flash Text Effect

I was wondering in Flash, if I would have to break up the text and make each a symbol, and put each letter in a layer of it's own to do a specific movement. That's how I was doing it, but there has to be an easier way to do it. Well I was just wondering. Thanx to anyone who can help.

there are third party programs that'll help you do text effects, but i prefer to do it myself, exactly the way you describe, except to keep it more organized, i create a MC and do all the stuff in there. then on the main timeline, just match exactly the total length of the MC.
