Every time you add the 2 digits and subtract, its a multiple of nine. And all the multiples of nine have the same symbol. (except zero, but that doesn't count in 2 digit numbers)

nifty. i just spent like 15 minutes explaining it to my mom. finally she realized that the symbols rearrange, after id been telling her that for the whole time.
