I've read some not very good things about the Sandisk memory. Anyone have any opinions? (as if anyone on AT was without an opinion) :D

I've heard Sandisk bashed in some reviews/forums but others say they have no problems, YMMV.
Compusa has the Lexar 256MB SD for $59.99 (no rebates required) through 12/24
Note this is _not_ the high speed stuff 32x
It is lexar Model number SD256-231
Compusa sku 295710
It is linked above in the summary.
You can probably find a card reader for the other $10 bucks compared to the Sandisk & reader for $70.

Officemax at least in my area has digital concepts memory card readers for $10 - $10MIR = Free.
I picked up one of the SD readers. They are single type memory readers and USB 1.1 not 2.0.
But free is free.
This is while supplies last and I had to ask at the counter for them, they didn't have them on display.

No problems with my single 256MB Sandisk CF and my Canon A70. :) Just remember to turn the camera off BEFORE swapping memory cards. ;)

Never had a single problem with my Sandisk SD or CF.

Also, Livewarehouse has the Lexar Jumpdrive 128 MB (USB 1.1) for $19.99.

Not sure about shipping though.

I had a 128MB SD card that came with a Sandisk Cruzer. The card is not very reliable after about 70MB. Pictures either come out half-gray or totally corrupted. They'll show up okay on a regular view on the camera but zooming into it will cause the image to jump back to the last "good" picture. I had similiar problems with filesystem corruption when I had it in the Cruzer. I'd have to run scandisk on it every so often to clear the problems. It might have been a bad batch that Sandisk put out but it's been really annoying.

I think I'll stick with the Lexars from now on. Fast and reliable from all the reviews I've seen so far. Also, the Compusa 256MB Lexar SD expired on 12/27/03 so don't even bother trying to find it. :disgust::|

Re: OfficeMax 256MB SD deal: $49.99 ($20 MIR) - Lexar SD256 - OfficeMax [01/04-01/10]
Item Number 2060-2108
Was already out of stock at my local stored Springfield, PA, and when I called already on backorder.
I went to the store about 5pm sunday night and called around 8PM.
I ordered one and hope it arrives in time for the rebate.

About SanDisk quality: their xD is made by Toshiba just like Fuji & Olympus, and my 128MB SanDisk package contained an Olympus "card".

... If anyone knows a place to get a SD 256 for about 50 bucks that is still going on, please let me know (and not Ecost with their Smart 256 with the 25 Rebate (cause of their damn "handling fee", it's the princple of it))...
I hear ya! I went shopping online for 256 mb SD tonight for the first time and yep, I homed in on what looked like the best deal around, being Kingston at ecost for $64 - $10 MIR, but when I checked out I saw not only a surprise tax (well, what do you expect?) but that 5 buck handling fee, and my reaction was the same (and this happened to me before, and probably at ecost). It's the principle of the thing - they shouldn't try to sneak that in on you.

Ah, now that's what I was wondering. In my searches tonight I didn't see any talk about speed, etc. Some SD is faster than other? How do you determine what you're buying? For instance, I see Kingston 256 mb SD, and there's nothing to differentiate it from anything else. My impression is that it's the only kind of 256 mb SD they make. Lexar has different qualities? Where do you go to get any sense of what's better/best/etc.? Any sites or review links? I've heard that you can get card readers for free after rebates on a regular basis (every other week at OM). Are these decent?

SD 256 mb is what I was shopping and here's the current data (from the updated first post):

SecureDigital

256mb
$59.99 - Lexar SD256 - CompUSA SKU:295710 [01/11-01/17]
$64.00 ($15 MIR) - Kingston SD/256 - Kingston.com SKU:sd/256 [01/01-01/31] LIMIT 2 PER CUSTOMER
$64.99 - SanDisk SDSDB-256 - Costco IN STORE ONLY

The best deal I could find beats these and it is ecost.com, where the price is $64 + $4.95 processing and handling, + applicable state tax (if any), free shipping, - $10 rebate extended by Kingston to select online retailers (PCMall, MacMall,eCost.com, CCIT, ClubMac) if purchased in January 2004.

Link

For me, this comes out (with CA tax) effectively a bit under $65. At first I was displeased because eCost only represents that handling charge when you check out. However, next day I realized it was still easily the best deal around so I ordered. The free shipping is UPS Ground, and my scheduled delivery date is one week from the order date, Wednesday. I checked out those other etailers and their deals are not nearly as good. I know, better deals will come along, but I looked far and wide and there seemed to be no better deal, at least last Wednesday.

That CompUSA deal on Lexar would come out about the same after tax, if you can get it.

not surprising ... OM usually pulls potential best selling sales items from its website to get you to go to the B&M.

albrandwood: don't forget that you can't post coupon codes here at AnandTech (you have one listed in the xD section).

While searching for some reviews and comparisons on flash memory I came across a site comparing memory speeds in digital cameras.
