What's the most recent consensus on Speed.

I'm looking at 8+ gb only.

What to get guys?

They are all about the same. The speed difference between them is marginal at best.

Be aware that these new large chips can take a lot of power in write or erase modes, some readers won't even work from a base port unless you have no other USB items plugged in that take much power at all - some of the high capacity thumb drives even state that you need a self-powered Hub to run them that can supply significantly more power to the ports than the 500mA that a normal internal port can supply.

Looks like the GT series has been discontinued/EOL'ed. Plenty of regular Flash Voyager's are still available though.

I haven't run into that...yet.

The biggest I have is an 8GB, so it must be 16 and up?

The bigger the drive, the more power needed. There is an article on that in the new PC World.

Also, it is not adviseable to defrag flash drives or SSDs.

I wrote to Kingston and SanDisk and asked about power requirements for the larger thumb drives and they never replied... I think the product page on the large SanDisk cruzers mentioned the power need but not in specifics.

you're being sarcastic right? my Sandisk was about 3x as fast as the no name one I had. And my friends OCZ blows my Sandisk out the water. I'm not talking a few seconds. xfering 2 gigs of files his will be done in half the time. If you do a lot of smaller files it can get even wider with some brands. a 5 vs 1.5 min difference isn't something I would consider marginal.

ocz rally 2 turbo and atv turbo are very fast. around 20mib/s write and 30mib/s read

I'm looking for one too to use with eboostr in my old lappy with winXP. I'll probably go with the ocz rally 2 4gb.

yea,, that turbo looks amazing,, but idk bout 90 dollars amazing

if you decide to buy ocz make sure it has "turbo" in the name. ocz rally 2 is around 10mib/s slower than the turbo version. patriot xporter xt is good too but it has 2 or more versions so you might end up with a dud

Thx for req,, i just went with the regular ocz rally 2, cuz of the price 8gig 12 dollars after rebate free shipping.

I couldn't justify 90 dollars for a flash drive, which is something I've experienced numerous times to break at random.

Yep, have had mine for a few days. Seems quick enough for my needs, though I've never used any "turbo" fast drives.

the read speed is close to the top, while the write speed is slow, but with that price it seems just what I need for my task.
