Its called Step Side so that you can get in the bed from the sides and move your loads around without having to jump on the tire to get in on the sides, and you have a step, usually, to tie down to as well. Yes you lose some inside bed space, BUT, in a regular bed the wheel covers are in the bed, not making the bed exactly square, so when loadin git you usually get a good foot gap between your load and the sides of the bed, allowing you load to shif while driving.

So just because it doesnt work out for you and your needs, doesnt mean the world thinks the same way, or they wouldnt be making them at all if there was no use for it, be it for style, or professional use.

Look closely at the bed on that Cameo. It's a stepside bed with bodywork to make it a styleside (you can tell because there are no wheel-wells in the bed). Ford was the first to offer a true "styleside" bed that took advantage of the extra width for bed space.
