Depends how close you are to the CO or RT and line conditions. Another big factor is the condition of the internal house wiring.
Most people should run a new line from the outside gray box to the DSL modem inside their homes.
All that factored in their is no reason why a phone line can't carry 5.2 megabits with the fastest package 6000/768 which is available from other DSL providers.
PS: Just because you have had bad luck or didn't run a new line to the modem in your home doesn't means others won't.
No he is right. Im beyond pissed with SBC, I had the 6000/608 package for $45 a month, I capped that easily, dowloads were average 600+KB/sec. However the SBC sales rep messed up and switched me down to the 3000/512 package, which can't be reversed since the 6000/608 package is no longer out there. Now obviously my line can handle alot more.... but instead of half the speed like it should be, so around 300KB/sec, I get 150-200KB/sec. He is right, most people even if their line is capable of it do NOT get the full 3Mb/sec.
