1. Has been reliable and fast for me and many others.

2. 19.95 is dirt cheap and 29.95 is a bargain for 3 megabits

4. SBC has really improved but they had no choice.

5. Comcast HSI is expensive and even more so if you don't have cable TV.

6. 20 x 12 = 240 or 50 x 12 = 600 { 600 - 240 = $360 } $360 can be spent on a wicked Computer upgrade.

No he is right. Im beyond pissed with SBC, I had the 6000/608 package for $45 a month, I capped that easily, dowloads were average 600+KB/sec. However the SBC sales rep messed up and switched me down to the 3000/512 package, which can't be reversed since the 6000/608 package is no longer out there. Now obviously my line can handle alot more.... but instead of half the speed like it should be, so around 300KB/sec, I get 150-200KB/sec. He is right, most people even if their line is capable of it do NOT get the full 3Mb/sec.

Because of overhead:

SYNC speed = 3 megabits

ACTUAL = 2.6 MEGABITS or 325 KBps

You really need to know what your line is SYNC at though, if there is a lot of noise then it will sync a lot lower.

SBC should be forced to use the ACTUAL speed and not the SYNC speed in there advertising.

But here is the point...my line is more then capable. I had sync of 6000 before, now I sync at 3000, I should clearly beable to hit 300KBps or higher, I hit 600-620 before. But Im not, Im hitting MAYBE 200KBps max.

And as I said before, after calling them about why my speeds were lower, they told me it was static in the lines. What makes me upset is the fact that I know I can hit 300k download speeds since I had for the entire first month, and now that the speed has dropped, I had talked to them and they said (after many problems with the CSR understanding me as well as many, many problems with me understanding them) that they would send a worker out to look at the line and try to fix it, but it would cost an estimated $150-200 for them to do so. That's how much it would cost me in early contract termination fees. I just have a problem with them wanting to charge me for wanting my speeds back to the point at which they were. I told them to go ahead and have the guy come out and take a look and see if there was anything that could be done, and that I do not want any work requiring charges until they notify me how much it would be for sure and I approved it (they said it wouldn't cost for the guy to look). Well, that was last November, and 20+ calls later have still not resulted in the work order that I had put in to actually be completed. They keep on saying that it will be another day or two and the tech will call me, and that there isn't anything else they can do on their end. So, like I said, I won't be renewing.



... The express package would be nice though! 😀

I have had the $26.95 per/month basic package which is the same as the express for 6 months now. I made the call today and even after speaking to a supervisor, I'm still stuck at the same price. The supervisor said the $19.99 a month is for new customers only.

Not everyone can get cable service and even those who can can't always get a good rate! If you can find a better deal on DSL then please step in with the information! This IS a HOT DEAL. BTW many people (MOST) still don't have VOIP or Cell Only phones in there house. I really fail to see how your opinion of this not being a hot deal even applies. Just because this Hot Deal doesn't apply to you doesn't mean its not a good deal for MANY others. Try not to be so narrow minded.

Like I've said before, DSL is better in my opinion than Cable, even though they may have slightly higher speeds than average dsl speeds. HOWEVER, DSL being a dedicated line, you're allowed to do whatever you want with that line, run servers, all that kind of stuff. Which is typically frowned upon by Cable internet providers. This great for me since I run servers here at home, and I also don't have to worry about my bandwidth dropping at all due to a shared connection as well.

EDIT : mscdex0 I see your in Ohio SBC is very popular here in the midwest.
I will confess I am changeing over to COVAD Dedicated as I have Cingular and I am going to try a VOIP on this line as well..COVAD offers here in the midwest for $75 on this dedicated line versus a shared..like SBC...It comes off to be a bit more but will be worth it to me.

I just call to 1-877-722-3755, and choose cancelations (or "disconecting") I was inmidiatly taken care off and off the phone in 5 min. My monthly charge is now 19.95!

PS: Like I mentioned my contract was up in a month and half or so.

i have had the 1.5Mbps package for over 2 years. i always get ~1.3Mbps but i live only 1500 feet from the telco. never had the 3Mb package but never needed it. fast enough for downloads (160KBps) and my ping is low on most game servers (25-50) with almost no fluctuations.

and if you move they only hold you to your contract if it's available in your new area. At least that's what they told me when i moved.

I don't think i'd gamble with the 3Mbps, never heard of anyone actually hitting above 2.5, usually 2.0. SBC customer service sucks really bad though, so if that bothers you....

edit: also my service has only been down twice since i got it. both times at around 3am on monday morning... only knew of it because they sent a message before hand.

This deal is not easy to get. You need all distance, so they say but they lied it's just trying to get you to pay more for a service you don't need to get this discount.
It's all up to the CSR discretion, often you have to speak to the manager or get transfered to detention center where you can jerk them around for awhile to get this promotional deals

You get double the download speed on expert pro but only 33 percent faster uploads
1.5/384 vs 3.0/512 (Kind of cheesy)

SBC is a cheapo like they always have and lowering price temporarily just to lure in new customers, not for current subscribers (you have to beg for it and demand it, otherwise tough luck)

I like broadband but I hate the caps, able to sync at 8.0/1.0 because about 4.5-5k on the RT, had 6000/608 for awhile and it was rock solid but at 44.99+5.17 USF was still a bit pricey for only a measly 96kbps upload increase from 512kbps on expert pro
Why is ADSL limit upload to 1mbps? Because if it were higher, a T1 would not be marketable
Upload is as important as download, marketing from these greedy bastards proves otherwise

I signed up last week for the express package (1.5m/384k). I got the modem in today, and hooked everything up.

For some reason, if I access the modem directly, it will say downstream 384k, upstream 384k...

And all tests show that I'm capped at 384k. It should be 384k MINIMUM, and 1.5M max, what gives?

On the packaging slip it says "Service activation date 3/10/2005"

Do I actually have to wait that long for them to bump it up to 1.5M, or is this an error on their part?

This is slower than my cable connection which I got rid of which was 384k MAX. *shrug*

Really? They didn't charge you the $200 early termination fee?

That's what the telemarketer told me two years ago when I set up my phone line. I wasn't sure if I would stay or relocate to another state, so it was an issue. After calling SBC's billing people and talking to a couple different people, I finally found someone who could give a definitive answer--if you relocate to another location where the SBC services if physically unavailable, you still have to pay the $200 early termination fee. Of course, since it looks as though their left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing, it's possible that this person was wrong, but that's my impression.

I'd really like to get the actual policy in writing. If I could get the service without having to worry about the possibility that I might move to a non-SBC area within a year, I'd jump on it like a bum on a balognia sandwich.

no. that's how dsl works. your modem is syncing and auto-adjusting to get the optimal speed. In a day or 2, you will see 1.5mbit speeds. More realistically, 1.2 mbit....

Well, what I do know is that (they told me this when i first signed up a year ago, and they told me it again when i upgraded to the pro package) they say to leave your modem on for 10 straight days after the day they tell you (the day the service is technically supposed to be available). They say it's to calibrate and tweak the settings on your modem for optimal speed. Last year, I never attempted to plug in and use my modem before the date they said, so I can't say for sure that's why you're having speed problems.
