Hmm,

I dont have answer to your inquiry. All I can tell you is that GW500 runs on linux kernel, its own propietary software. So I dont really know what it is that is being runned.

In anycase, a linux expert could probably assemble the same system with all linux freeware. But that would take significant time and energy. And as for the lcd panel, you would probably be able to write a program to display whatever you want on it as been said by someone earlier and based on what I have seen, its a serial connection to an extra PCB in the front ldc display.(actually its not that fancy)

Kraeji and Tot,
I also got an open box with nothing else - no manual or cd. I might wipe the
whole thing and do a clean install of redhat.

Kraeji - the manual is online. see my earier post for the links. unfortunately it's
not a single pdf you can download but many separate pages of html.

so are we totally hosed trying to us the system as is because of the lack of a serial number?

FYI Here is a link to the FIC support site where you can download a PDF manual of the Sahara 3810 MB used in this system. This site also includes BIOS files and various drivers that you might need if you plan on installing a different OS.

Just for you guys.

I read the license agreement/ third party software information at the end of the manual provided by Gallantry(printed 2002)

And found this list of third party software

apache software foundation
Engelschall
Fetchmail
GNU General Public License
Harvard University
IBM
Internet software consortium
Microsoft Frontpage 2000 server extensions
OpenSSH
OpenSSL
PHP
Sleepycat software
SSLeay
The internet software consortium
University of Manitoba
University of california, Berkeley
University of Washington

And in this list I can see a couple that are in RH8.0. namely apache, OpenSSH/L and PHP. As for the rest I dont know.
I know that the redhat.com have a list of RPMS(some 10,000 of them) that makes up RH8.0.

Tot, it would be extremely helpful if you posted that info on the Yahoo! Group as we are all trying to figure out which program controls the LCD and such... thanks!

Anyone know how much one of these, all boxed up right from the store weighs?
One of my friends picked it for me, but I need to send him a shipping label to actually send it to me. To do this, I need to know the weight-however, he doesn't have a scale. I'm hoping someone can tell me what it weighs (NOT just the unit itself-I need the combined weight of the unit, box, manuals, etc) Thanks!

About 15 lbs give or take any additional packaging your friend uses if he double boxes. Dimensions were 15wx18lx8d I believe.

Hey if anyone finds an extra 3 of these, please let me know. Also, would you consider selling them to me at half what you paid, and also send them to me free? Much obliged. :disgust:

Still need one of these. Ohio is definately completely out, so is Indiana and Pennsylvania. Willing to trade/m.o./combo for anyone willing to sell one. Have Cendyne 48x CD/RW (Not Lite-On), 10Gig USB 2.0 External HDD, USB 2.0 PCI card, and a VERY nice 20x4 LCD ready to go parallel or serial (w/ a serial board) for a PC Project I never started.

Bottom line, if it wasn't me it would've been those employees.
The one that I have on hold, it's for a friend, at cost.
I've never called you a Kid. (Real World Economics) Many Managers and Executives pick their noses during their work hours and receive their pay, that's how it is. If you can't except that, well you can go live in N. Korea. (the last communist country)

And I've never called you a Dog, read over. It's an example, learn from it.

And Tot, you are not me and you are not Kraeji so I guess you need to butt out.
YOu don't know me.

Many time, I offered and actually sent free things to anandtechers. (Case Aluminum cover sheets, paints, etc...)

So I do *favors* for people for receiving benefits from this wonderful forum.

So everyone, Shhhhh!!!!

And Tot

Ok... this warrants a reply from me because seeing how "professional" and "mature" you really are, why do you keep on replying to a "kid" who seems to be bothering you to no end?

FIRST of all, you are posting in a PUBLIC forum. Are you that ignorant or were you just born that way? So why are YOU telling Tot, and everyone else, to Shhhhh??? Seems like you wish you were living in a communist society where free speech doesn't go hand in hand with inalienable rights. So why don't you do us ALL a favor and Shhhhhhh? Or at least take it to PMs like it was stated earlier. What, are you not mature enough to admit defeat? Ooooh wait that would just hurt your image of being such a perfectionist.

Second, if you are of any higher intellect, you DID in fact imply that Kraeji is a "kid" AND a "dog". Sure you didn't call him one in his face, but one whose had any experience with the english language knows that inferrences mean more than words do. Oh wait, maybe you haven't taken your GREs yet.... Ooops, my bad.

So why don't you "butt out" and stfu? I'm getting annoyed at your incessant "I'm better than you, you lowlife kid" shpiels. It's just ironically comical how you keep on replying in a public forum where you flaunt your social status (or lack thereof) yet is still unable to cope with being emotionally inferior to a so called "kid".

So basically, I guess all I'm trying to say is, grow up and act your age.

and who are you? I keep on replying cuz i want the last say, so you STFU

Wow, that must be the single best reply I've seen all year:

"and who are you? I keep on replying cuz i want the last say, so you STFU"

You know, I know retarded children who are half my age that can do better than that.

And as always, you are showing your maturity to the fullest I'm sure. Welcome to the real world, son.

But I can tell you the default settings that you probably can try. 1) configure your XP/win2000/win98/me workstation to this TCP/IP setting. (IP: 10.0.0.2) subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 gateway 10.0.0.1 DNS server search order(for win98) 10.0.0.1 And then enter ok. Reboot with win98/me 2) Then open your web browser and enter this into the address: http://10.0.0.1:8000 3) then if you are lucky it will ask you the log in name. User/PSW super/super 4) And you are in. But you are not over yet. You will need a serial number if its the first time this server was setup. In anycase, you should prolly ask the Compusa manager to give you further discount as essentially you are without any software becasue of the lack of a serial. Hope that helps.

SN# is on the back.. no matter though.. i can always just put in a new distro + software of my choice if i have to :)

The fighting has got to stop. And please stop quoting each other!! Take it to PMs!!

So here's my addition to the thread: To those of you who cannot get into the server because you do not know the root password, and you don't know enough Linux to fix it yourself...

Hook up kb/mouse/video to the box.
Turn the box off.
Turn the box on.
When it says "LILO" hit tab.
It should say "gallantweb" iirc and then give you another LILO prompt.
Type "gallantweb -s" (substitute what it gave you when you hit tab if not gallantweb, and you must use the -s flag).

It will boot up partially and you will be in single user mode when it is done.
The server will give you a bash# prompt when it is ready.
At the prompt type "passwd root".
It will ask for a new root password.
Type what you want.
Then it will ask for confirmation.
Type it again.
Now you have reset the root password.

Type "shutdown -r now" or just "reboot" and the machine will reboot itself.
You will end up at the normal login prompt once it is back up.
Type root as the name and your new password to login.

Now go find a friend who knows Linux or something because you will probably have some real difficulties learning Linux without a local friend who knows Linux and likes to help. Getting in to the box is just the first step!

Also, to those who wondered if installing Redhat etc over FTP would work, the answer is a definite yes. I will see if I can find a HOWTO that you can refer to.

Finally, I will see what I can do about the LCD, but No promises.

Wayne, your friendly Linux geek

Here is the Network Install HOWTO I mentioned.

link

This HOWTO describes how to install Linux over a Local Area Network (LAN). It covers setting up and administrating the install server machine as well as installing client machines from your server. Since Network Installation is distribution dependent it covers SuSE, Redhat and Debian installs but also includes a generic Linux network install guide.
