Cheap but very good USB 2.0 480Mbps 2.5" Hard Disk Enclosure. Got this a month or so ago from another site ($89.99) but just today realized what it is. After more searching I found a much better deal at here it is only $58, [coz I need another one for my sister, I did searched pricewatch, price , price grabber and dealtime for the best deal, i am petty sure it is a hot deal]

I used the ones on xp and they work just amazing---perfect transfering speed i never met before!!! I did not even use the installation cd, and then win xp recognize it automatically. (worth every penny). I can even put it inside my T-shirt pocket. Be Happy to Share this info wiith your guys who like to share mp3 and Divx Movies.

i need one of these, but for a 3.5" drive. i wanna bring my 60 gigger from the pc abroad with me this spring to use with a laptop. anyone know where i can get one cheap? $70 at tiger direct is the best i've found. needs to be usb, not firewire.
btw, you can get the 2.5" ones for cheap on ebay. i saw some for about $20 browsing. don't know how good they are though.

I just recently bought this at Fry's for the same price, and I think it totally rocks. Works well in Win 98 (once you install the driver) and Win2000 and XP worked instantly. Definitely a great deal IMO.

those are great prices, but it may be worth a little extra dough for the usb 2.0 enclosures and a usb 2.0 card for your computer (be it pci or pcmcia)

Killer price!! Thanks laserpen!! USB 2.0 is much much faster than USB 1.0. I hate that slow 1.0 one.

If I had the cash I'd be all over this. It's hard to decide between firewire and USB 2.0 though, since my University's art department mainly has Mac's (shudder). :)

Compgeeks has USB 1.0 2.5 in enclosures for $21. Slow, perhaps, but also fast enough for backing up and really cheap...

Packy,

You do not have to choose, I have seen combo enclosures which have USB 2.0 and Firewire. I will try to post link later, I am at work and connection is amazingly slow.

Are the USB 2.0 enclosures backward compatible? Meaning can I plug it in to an old USB port and use it, even if it runs slower?

thanks dsp282. good price. now trying to think whether its worth it to spend a little more and get a usb 2.0 version. would be much faster. then of course i'd have to get the adapter too....
EDIT: oh yeah, the 2.0 models are all backwards compatible with 1.0, 1.1
