Yesterday I mentioned this deal to my wife who has been wanting a new laptop. Our local BB?s rarely have the clearance prices people find and post here. I told her to have her parents who live 4 hours away from us, but less than a mile away from a BB to go check their store. Perhaps they would get lucky. No luck, they didn?t even have one in stock. But they had their BB check stock in our area, and said one store an hour away from us had 11, and a store 20 minutes away from us had 1. I told her not to bother, there were no confirmed reports on the ?smoking? price at ATHD other than the OP. She went down there today in spite of my advice not to waist her time and gas. She said the store was dead. She asked if they had the laptop in the OP. He checked the computer and said they had one and it was $499. She said a ?friend? picked one up at a different store for $309. He asked what store and she said she wasn?t sure. She was right there looking over the BB employees shoulder and saw a listing of all the stores in our region including the local price. She pointed out a nearby store that sold their last one at $304 something and asked if they would match that. Nobody was more surprised than I when she told me he said yes.

Not even a YMMV, but just luck that belongs in the brag and moan section, if there still was one. My thanks to Harvey for the OP though. I?m going to find those XP drivers and upgrade it.

Other people were doing it with the RocketFish Case so I don't see why not.
As long as the price changes in the system, I think you can do it.

Found one of these at my Best Buy, however there was no price attached to it. I talk to one of the workers there for a price, and he kind examines it a bit, looks at the bottom, "yeah i think this is the uh blah blah model blah blah it's older and was replaced about a year ago, and it's...$649. it's actually 669 but this is an open box model so i can take $20 off of it".

At the time I didn't think much of it at all, but could he just have been holding this for himself? There's no way this thing goes for $669 now is there..what could I do if I go back?

The best way to find one in your area is to call a local BB store. Their computer system can give you the price and inventory for the stores in your region. Then, as I said in my OP, call that store, and ask for an eyes on confirmation that they really have it.

My friends and I got the last three. All three units were missing the remote control. 🙁

I phoned BB to report the problem. Luckily, I got the guy who handled our deal. He checked, and BB's own data showed the same. He said the'd get them from HP and ship them to me. 😀

One more thing... If you score one, DO NOT do anything until you create a restore disk set, three DVD's, two DL DVD's or far-too-many-teen CD's to consider. You may need it to get help with warranty service. Even more important if you intend to put XP on it. 😉

The current BB coupons I've seen don't include notebooks or other computers, and they specifically exclude clearance items, or I would have been all over it.

When I asked the guy about the possibility of matching $308.99, the guy said flat out no. Nor he knew anything about the remote...

This was the third store I checked, the first store not having any to sell, the second being adamant about $449.99, so I gladly took it for $100 less even though it was a display model.

Just got home and opened it up to be pleasantly surprised at how good it looks. Moreover, it sports a nvidia 7150m instead of x1130 or x3100 most other cheapie laptops come with. Theoratically speaking, x3100 would perform better; in reality 7150m runs MUCH better in most things from what I have gathered. It plays games I play reasonably well.

The only buyer's remorse I have is whether I really needed a laptop with two desktops at home 🙁
