Today I was trying to set up a temporary FTP server to get a file from friends who are behind a firewall. This is technically a breach of the end user agreement, but while the tech i talked to agreed it was no different than sending it through another means, he tells me to shove it. He tells me Road Runner blocks FTP protocol over the entire range of ports. Ok fine. I open up IRC, and we attempt a DCC Send. Timed out. We open up AIM and attempt a DCC Send. Timed out. Now I understand why they don't want people hogging upload bandwidth but I'm trying to move a single frigging file here, and they have blocked off all means to send it. Now what the fsck am I paying them 45 dollars a month for? to cap everything they can and tell me to check my email like a nice little boy? Now I'm looking into DSL rates. May be more expensive, but at least they aren't fscking Nazi's.

Uh... lol.

It isn't roadrunner thats blocking the connection, it's the other guys firewall.

Just setup an FTP server on port 667 or something like that.

Uh no. the other persons firewall allows connections originating from behind the firewall out. I know because i lived behind it before. their firewall allows connections to servers which i am hosting, and they allow dcc sends from behind it to outside (me). Plus, my ftp worked fine for a few minutes last week, and when i started it up to move another file today, it was timed out.

It has to be.

If there was no way to send a file, then there would be no way to connect, period.. lol

The man speaks the truth, however there is a simple solution. Have you friend forward port 113 in his firewall software to the computer he is trying to send form, then have him in irc go to file ->options ->dcc ->options set first port to 4990 and last to 5000 and whamo he can send :)

How is Roadrunner going to tell whether you're connecting to someone to send them a file, or just a single packet of data, a'la an IM or even a ping?

Have you tried direct connecting on AIM?

somehow they're blocking all file transfer protocols, everything else works fine.

You are missing the point, unless identd is forwarded in their software they can NOT dcc send.

i can talk on aim fine, and even set up secure connections on icq, but when i try to receive a file over it, it does not connect, and times out.

....What's the difference between a "file transfer protocol" and a normal TCP/IP packet?

If you try to FTP on the FTP port, and they're blocking it, then yes, that won't work.. but if you change it to a port that isn't blocked, it should work fine.

Therein lies the problem, so long as he is sending the file, you will not be able to get it, most edus have secured their networks so people can't nt pass scan them. Have him email it to you.

Try Direct Connecting with AIM.

Hmm, perhaps I'm not understanding the problem.

You are not behind a firewall, correct?

You have a file that you want to send to someone that is behind a firewall?

Or the person behind the firewall is trying to send you a file?

I am trying to receive a file.

I am not behind a firewall.

The sender is behind a *.edu firewall (uneditable).

FTP serving on my machine from ports 21 and 80 do not work (connection timed out).

IRC DCC Send from the sender to me does not work (connection timed out).

AIM File Transfer from the sender to me does not work (connection timed out).

Hmmm. Can the guy that wants to send the file setup an ftp server? Try some crazy port like 777.

i've tried doing that before when I was behind it to no avail. Actually irc fserves work half the time with the firewall workarounds enabled. still, i've given up trying to get the problem solved, like the title says this is a flame thread where i give the bird to road runner and search for a nice little mom and pop dsl provider :D That last episode of Futurama I missed isn't worth road runner getting what they want, which is me surfing the web and checking email like a good little AOL whore. Thanks for the help though :)
