Do these schools have PE? Wasn't mentioned in the blurb and I don't feel like reading the article right now, but I know that's been a trend lately removing PE and all. d

Just wait for some retarded asshole parents to sue.

"my fat fuck kid was forced to jog for 5 minutes. both of his ankles were crushed. our medical bill is over $20,000 to put pins in them to hold the joint together"

Then the ATOT discussion starts. If a fat kid is forced to run or be held back a year, is it the school's fault that he got hurt while doing the required jogging.

Most allow kids to Opt out of things like that or have options if parents call. I remember even in middle school the fat kid that just sat while everybody else did their work outs. So not new.

some elementary schools limit physical activity due to parents trying to sue them because they get a bruise or a cut or some other mundane everyday playground injury.

If a fat kid was so fat that he somehow crushed his ankles by running, then his parents should be sent to jail for child neglect. Letting your kid becoming that unhealthy and fat is a crime.

A complete and utter waste of time and taxpayer dollars. First, the parents already know it, it's not like it's going to be some sort of revelation. If they haven't done anything about it already, a stupid letter is not going to do anything.

Yes, but in the ago times you were allowed to mercilessly ridicule
And boy, did that help a lot, it reduced the problem! ... oh wait, it didn't. That's a plain stupid approach.

The school should focus on what it is supposed to do: educate the children. Leave all the dumb "progressive" touchy feely betterment of society junk out of it.

Most people don't recognize anything under obess as being an issue. Most of the people on ATOT who look at a picture of someone overweight would say they are fine.

Probably because your weight has little to do with your health. Back in the 60s and before, lots of people had heart attacks when they were skinny. It's not like fat people were the first people in the world to have heart disease.
People of today have the exact same heart disease that existed 10,20,30,40 years ago, but people are fatter now.

Scientists do studies about this stuff and it usually confirms what everyone already knows.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26143255/ns/health-heart_health
A new study suggests that a surprising number of overweight people — about half — have normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels, while an equally startling number of trim people suffer from some of the ills associated with obesity.
In other words skinny people are just as unhealthy as fat people. My being skinny is actually a direct result of underlying health problems I have.

At my lowest weight, I was extremely skinny and my face didn't photograph well because the lack of fat in the cheeks caused shadowing when the flash went off. At that time, my body mass index was in the "normal" range. If being normal means looking like a holocaust survivor then I'd rather not be normal.

who wants to bet they still serve deep fried 'steak fingers' and french fries (which are a 'vegetable' under the regs) with chocolate milk for lunch?

This is none of the schools business.

Yet another example of "progressives" trying to social engineer while wasting taxpayer money.

How about we focus on reading, writing, math, and science first.

Are you serious? No, you can't be serious.

What good is reading, writing, math, and science if your child is fat and unhealthy? What good is being "smart" intellectually if your health is going to suffer?

There needs to be a greater stress on living a healthy lifestyle from schools and this is an excellent step in the right direction.

What's wrong with these? Potatoes are vegetables.

They are deep fried in canola oil which is generally regarded as healthy.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canola#Health_benefits
Canola oil is low in saturated fat, is high in monounsaturated fat, and has a beneficial omega-3 fatty acid profile; it has well established heart health benefits[21] and is recognized by many health professional organizations including the American Dietetic Association, and American Heart Association, among others.[22][23][24][25] Canola oil has been authorized a qualified health claim from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration[26] based on its ability to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease due to its unsaturated fat content.

Now it all makes sense. It's those illuminati jews leftists at the American Heart Association who keep french fries on the menu :hmm:

wheat is a vegetable and yet it's still listed in the starch section of the food pyramid. the diabetus people do it right and put the potato in the starch section.

Honestly, the parents know their kid is fat, and this probably won't help anything. The only thing that might work would be to drastically change what is served in school lunches and have more (and strenuous) PE courses.

Dirty clothes are a sign of child neglect. Coming to school with a black eye after being beaten is also something teachers watch out for.

Dirty clothes are a sign of dirty clothes, and it has absolutely nothing to do with school work or school performance - hence it contradicts the rest of your previous statement.

You cannot claim that school officials should be on the lookout for dirty clothes, but then also claim that notifying parents that their children are getting fat is a no go beacuse it doesn't have to do with school work. Not without being amazingly hypocritical. Hell, you even said in that post "As long as being ugly and smelling like shit doesn't get in the way of school work, who cares?"

Pick one or the other.

I think its time the thin and attractive break off and form our own country. let all the fat people be fat together, no one wants to subsidize their health care anymore.

The nation needs to institute a BMI tax. The more overweight a person is the more of the tax they pay since they gobble up so much of our health costs.

Do you have evidence to back up death rates due to overweight/obesity is the same today vs 40 years ago? Also, during the 60's we don't have the medicine that we have today.

The article didn't say skinny people are just as unhealthy as fat people. Its stating that skinny people can be unhealthy too. Just because there are unhealthy skinny people this doesn't excuse being a fatass.

Normal weight != Skinny

Lastly, normal is not a holocaust survivor. Normal is being at the correct BMI range excluding senior citizens and athletes. In this day and age, pudge is considered normal, when in fact it is NOT normal.

There's absolutely no reasoning as to why its ok/normal to be oveweight/obese, because its not.

Are schools frying them in canola oil?

I wonder how many of the staff members are overweight. Perhaps they could post the weights and BMI's of all the teachers, administrators, and other staff? I don't think my tax dollars should go to support overweight staff either.

There will be even more overweight staff in the future with all the new fat kids growing up to replace them.
