Why are flags at half mast for Columbus day? Doesn't seem like something for which that would be done.

Yeah but that isn't exactly why this nation remembers Columbus day.

That's odd. I haven't seen it around here. But then again I wasn't looking at flags on my way to work.

They are probably just doing it to make room for the mexican flag above it.

Well I was curious why they were....so I looked up some stuff and I found a list of holidays where you can fly them at half mast and Columbus Day was listed. And there were no tragedies or anything locally recently so that's the only thing I can think of.

You're in CO. they were probably mourning the impending death of the Broncos season.

boo, we don't 'observe' Columbus Day until the day after Thanksgiving. BS. just wanted to cheat us out of a day off of school.

and as far as flags go, no half-massed flags here in Columbus.

Ouch. That's cold Red. Too bad it's true.

Which reminds me, I meant to post a new thread today about the Raiders being #1 in their division. :p

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim October 8, 2007, as Columbus Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities. I also direct that the flag of the United States be displayed on all public buildings on the appointed day in honor of Christopher Columbus.

According to the president it should be flown, but not half mast.

Here is your reason: Fire Prevention Week.

I think we stopped getting Columbus Day off from school some time in Junior High.

Hahaha.
It dates back to the great wars about this issue.
I haven't found a quote to replace it with.

Edit: actually, now I have.

Great, now I'll be thinking about Platypus not thinking about your penis every time you post.
