Flagging Necro Threads

Okay, this is a very minor peeve. But it'd be nice if old long-dead threads that are brought back to life by a new posting were easier to spot. Would it be possible to show the OP date along with the OP name under the thread title? Or maybe change the font color if the elapsed time between OP and last post exceeded a threshold (e.g. 3 months)? Just a thought...

I'd like it if the first post were a different color than all the rest if its older than a month. And another color if its older than a year.

BUT, you should always read the date in the OP anyway, its right there in the upper corner. Thats how I know this tread is over a month old, but I still had something to suggest.

Perhaps there could be a time limit on threads like say a month or more. Any posts after a certain amount of time would not allow it to be put at the top of the board again. I personally hate to wade through old threads simply because some lonely guy with no friends wants somebody to chat with.

What they could do is during the 5+ hour "maintenance" routine thingy that only this site seems to require, have a SQL script run through all the threads and just lock the ones that are more than a specified time, such as a year. Could even have a different lock attribute that shows as "archived" or something. Would want to base this off the date of the last post, not the thread itself, though.

In fact instead of running such a large query, this check could be made when a thread is opened. Would just be a php level check, nothing major or resource consuming. The date of the last post could be added to a field of the thread itself to save on querying. Would literally take about an hour to code that in and maybe another hour to test, especially for someone familiar with the vB source code. I did it to an IPB forum years back, I'm sure the process would be fairly similar in vB.

I don't know why they insist on saving old threads anyways.

And don't tell me the content has some sort of redeeming value.

The statue of limitations should be one year and that's it.

Football is here.

I can see why they are kept, it still brings a certain number of traffic from people doing a google search. But making them self archive like I said is literally a 1-2 hour job. Then again it took like 5 years to convert from fusetalk, so I would not expect much. :awe:

Yes and there is NOTHING WRONG with replying to a thread with a last reply from 2002 IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO ADD TO THE TOPIC! (And the links are still valid in the thread)

I replied to a thread not too long ago with a last reply from 1999! (The link in the thread WAS STILL VALID!! -- PRETTY USEFUL SITE AS WELL) Heres the thread...

www.google.ca/search?q=cache:http://discussions.virtualdr.com/showthread.php?t=3207

Sadly they trashed thier site and put VB4 on there a couple weeks ago and as a result i no longer visit! (Its an ugly/slow piece of garbage now .. Brings me to tears.... Every GOOD/BEAUTIFUL website is turning into a piece of garbage (LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE))

I hope this one does not,the speed is excellent here, its beautiful!

You are the only person who responded to a thread since 1999 and you are claiming this thread is still useful? I call that a waste of people's time not useful. The only person for which it was useful for 13 years is you apparently. You're a prefect example why necro threads should be locked or something after a period of time.
