FLAC bitrate

i would like to make my audio collection available to me or my wife when not at home, so w/ flac as the codec, what type of internet connection is needed? will 512Kb/s up do? do i need 1Mb/s or faster?

You really need 1Mbit/s or faster, since most flac has a bitrate ~900kbit/s.

thanks, looks like that collection will be converted into a 192Kb/s mp3 as the most i can get w/out spending a fortune is 1Mb/s up....and there is other traffic going out 🙁

How would you make it available to yourselves away from home? A home run server? There's still a possibility of using flac, you'd just have to preload it to the source(pc?).

"winamp remote" seems to work pretty good. It buffers enough of the data. So far i have yet to get skips in my music.

i have a machine that runs http/s/ftp/s servers and is also the home server. i was planning on using this php script - http://www.turnstyle.com/andromeda/ as i have used it in the past and all has worked out well, but will look into winamp remote - not familiar w/ that i have been out of the audio loop for quite some time
