I am fixing a laptop for a friend. I have it connected to my home network and the icon in the notification area is saying it is connected as well. I cannot connect to using FF, Internet Explorer, or Chrome. I can somehow download updates from Microsoft, get on any of the messengers such as Yahoo and skype. Stupid crap like weatherbug is able to connect and give me real times updates on it as well. I have fully updated everything including drivers and whatnot. I still can use any of the browsers. I am lost don't know what else to do. I am hoping to avoid wiping everything even though that would be less of a headache than anything else so far.

did you already scan for viruses and malware?

This.

Download Malwarebytes (www.malwarebytes.org) and start with that one. Sounds like there is some sort of redirector/spyware proxy hijacking the browser (port 80). Even after running and removing some of this shit, the browsers still have a "Proxy" entered into the connection settings that must be manually turned off.

Good luck.

I have run AV but I didn't run malwarebytes even though I did install it. I will try that, love being an idiot and forgetting to run that. Hope to have good results.

Ya I have run the anti-virus again and Ihad run Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes found some infected items and removed but I can't update the definitions to something current without being connected all the way.

I also tried resetting the winsock as suggested above and the netsh int ip reset and that did not work as well. I would hate to wipe the thing. I am open for more suggestions.
