Fixing discontinued iPads: What's Apple's policy?

I have an iPad 2 which is still working fine, but I've noticed the edge started to lift up. So I pressed it down a few times and then held it there, and it's stuck back down again for now.

However, I'm thinking if it starts to lift up again, maybe it can be fixed. Does Apple actually do this? I know for defective batteries they'll replace an iPad for CAD$109, but do they do replacements or fixes for other models that are out of warranty and discontinued? If Apple did replace it for a fee, what model would they provide? I would assume it'd be another iPad 2 since they still sell refurbished ones at the Apple Store.

I note they replaced my discontinued iMac 27" 2009 with an iMac 27" 2010, but that was a different scenario since it was in-warranty and the 2009 was completely borked. In this case, the iPad 2 has long since been out of warranty, and still works fine, aside from the edge lifting up.

From what I understand Apple has a flat-fee repair service for all their computers, where you pay a certain amount (200-400) and send it in broken and they fix it. This is for computers though so I'm not sure about ipads. The iPad 2 should still be supported because apple kept building them long after they discontinued the iPad 3

No worry, even my ipad 1 they can still fix it. However, there "fix" is actually mean a replacement. It cost me 9 days in Hong Kong because they need to ship a new iPad from somewhere. They said that's new, but I don't really care. Even though it's a refurbish item, it looks new anyway, and they give me 3 months warranty if anything goes wrong.

Went to the Apple Store. They would replace the iPad 2 with another iPad 2 for $249. Ouch.

Maybe I'll just get my wife an iPad Air 2 or rumoured iPad Air Plus, and then give the iPad 2 to the toddler to destroy. Or else leave the iPad 2 at work and let her destroy my Nexus 7 instead. 😛

I traded my ipad2 in for $85 of store credit for my ipad air 2. Probably less than I could have sold it for if I had tried hard since it was in excellent condition, but it was fast and easy and it let me justify the 16->64GB of storage upgrade.

That might be a more cost-effective move than letting the small one annihilate it 😛

Well, considering it still works fine, I'd rather have her use that for the occasional Curious George episode than my shiny new iPad Air 2.

If I could get closer to $200 for it though, I'd probably sell it.
