Fixing an avi

I really hate that divx encoding. I have 3 vids that are avi's and all of them have problems. Virtualdub will not even open them. I used divxfix and they still won't open.

Assuming I can get them opened, how do I use virtualdub to make a whole new avi without divx encoding? Do I used direct stream or full processing mode? Not much of a user of this stuff, btw.

Did you make these Divx files yourself?, Are you sure these files are divx and not other format that has been renamed?

anyways you can try another pogram call Divxrepair.

If you want to make a whole new avi then you have to reencode. Direct stream will not encode anything and will just keep the video/sound file as is. Full processing mode is when you encode or reencode anything like video or sound.

No, I downloaded these quite some time ago. I tried divxrepair but it did not tell me it had fixed anything. Maybe there was nothing to fix. I'll keep trying and thanks.

I am using the DivXRepair that you linked for me. It seems better than the divxfix that I had. Seems to use virtualdub somehow, so if I use this hopefully Virtualdub will be able to open the file. Thanks.

The problem I am having now is that virtualdub tries to open the file, then a message box pops up with an error message but it closes so fast that I cannot read it. I assume that it has to do with the divx codecs installed in my system. I just uninstalled and then reinstalled the Nimo codec package, and it still happens ...

Get a program called GSpot to identify the codecs.

So, that was a great help to me. Apparently the problem is that the avi files are not complete. I was getting an error message that was not accurate and GSpot figured that out right away. Thanks again.

if it's not complete did you try "strip index" then "rebuild index" on divxfix,, that always works for me on incomplete files.
